Star Profile: Dionne Warwick
Few voices are as instantly recognizable as Dionne Warwick’s. Her elegant, unmistakable delivery helped turn the songs of Burt Bacharach and Hal David into pop standards, including “Walk On By,” “I Say a Little Prayer,” “Anyone Who Had a Heart” and, fittingly for a California star, “Do You Know the Way to San Jose?”
Warwick’s career has spanned more than six decades, earning her six Grammy Awards, a Kennedy Center Honor and induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. She also used her voice for something bigger. Her 1985 collaboration with Elton John, Gladys Knight and Stevie Wonder, “That’s What Friends Are For,” raised millions of dollars for AIDS research and became one of the era’s defining anthems.
Palm Springs added Warwick to its Walk of the Stars on Dec. 8, 2021. She told Palm Springs Life she was thrilled to join the entertainers already honored here and recalled spending time in the desert with Bob Hope and other show-business legends.
You can find Dionne Warwick’s star at 100 S. Palm Canyon Drive, near Oscar’s in downtown Palm Springs. It honors a performer whose music, humor and humanitarian work have connected generations.
