Did you know?

That in 1907 the Elks were the first to mandate an annual nationwide Flag Day Observance? President Harry S. Truman – who was a dedicated Elk member himself - signed the act of Congress designating Jun 14th as the National Flag Day. Ceremonies for Flag Day include a colorful display featuring the historical evolution of the American Flag, local JROTC, navel ROTC, Boy/Girl Scouts, and the American Legion presents colors and performs a 21-gun salute.

Our lodge will celebrate National Flag Day on Sunday, June 14th. The ceremony will start at 1:00 p.m. All members are encouraged to participate. Volunteers are needed so please sign up! Sign up sheets will be on each table at the lodge. This event is open to ALL veterans in our community. Please bring your veteran family members, co-workers, neighbors and buddies! Transportation, to and from this event, will be provided at no charge for the residents of Addington Place at College Harbor. A meal will also be provided at this gathering.

We will be taking a team to the VA Hospital in St Petersburg on July 1st. There we will distribute goodie bags to the hospitalized Veterans. This will be a wonderful time to honor and show appreciation to our Veterans who are in need. If you would like to be a part of this team, please sign up! Sign up sheets will be on each table at the lodge.

There is a lot of charity work going on that you can be involved in! If you have questions, or need more information, contact Estrellita at 941-587-3274 or Leesia at 832-480-6648. We need your help and support!

Elks ER Curt Mahoney presented Scott Biehler, Executive Director for the Mayors’ Feed the Hungry program, a check for $3,500.00 on June 5th. We thank our Mayor, Dan West, for attending. This money will be used to help “Feed the Hungry” in the Manatee and Sarasota communities. Since 1987 the Mayor’s Feed the Hungry Program has collected and distributed over 650 tons of food and over $4,400,000.00 in food gift cards. Thank you, Mayor and Scott, for recognizing the Elks devotion to your program with a ”certificate of appreciation”. The Elks have contributed a grant for seven years in a row to the Mayor’s Feed the Hungry program.

The Manatee River Assisted Living charity is growing and we need your help! In addition to filing and painting nails we are assisting the administration with the addition of a “Country Store”. The paper money they win from BINGO will allow the residents to purchase gifts, from the store, for themselves or for friends and family members. If you would like to help with this charity, please sign up! A sign-up sheet will be on each table at the lodge. Also, in the works, is an Amazon Registry. In this registry you will find items you can buy for the “Country Store”! We will let you know when this registry is up and running!

The stuffed animal drive for the residents of Manatee River Living facility is in full swing. We need a total of 100 bears to pass out at the pajama party on June 29th. We only have 17 bears so far! *If you are interested in purchasing bear(s) for this event, please see instructions that follow. We invite you to come and participate in the pajama party! Wear your favorite pjs, robe and slippers and make someone smile! Sign up sheets will be on each table at the lodge.

There was a large-scale phishing attempt targeting FSEA officers and staff. The message tried to impersonate the State President and asked for money to be sent via various online cash apps. Always review the actual email address from the sender. No FSEA officers or employees will ask you to spend your personal money. Be Careful!

Big thank you to Charlie McCoughley and his wife Elizabeth for paying, prepping and cooking Meatball Subs and Caesar Salad on Friday 5/22/26. The food was awesome!

Another thank you to Theresa Wendell & Pam Frysinger for all your hard work in cleaning up the Lodge Yard on May 12th.

Last but not least, Malcolm, at the Sunshine Thrift Store, for donating another 10 stuffed animals. We appreciate his generosity. We still need more. Please bring new or gently used stuffed animals to the Lodge by mid-June.

I am delighted to report that the Beacon Preparatory Academy students will be making 125 cards for the Veterans Hospital and for our Veterans at Happy Hour. What an amazing contribution to show our Veterans how much we care about them! Thank you, students.

Volunteering is one thing we encourage our members to participate in. As you know, we need help with the Veterans hospital visit and stuffing 100 bags of merchandise and supplies to be given out to each veteran. Also, we still need volunteers to help at the Manatee River Assisted Living Facility on Mondays to file and paint nails at 10:00 am. Please let Estrellita know via text 941-587-3274. Also, the kitchen will be closed on June 24th and we need volunteers to help clean the kitchen and do the floors.

If you can’t volunteer your time, we would appreciate any donation to help with our charitable needs. We need items for the “Country Store” at the Manatee River Assisted Living Facility. A few ideas for you to donate – art works, flower arrangements (fake), jewelry, robes, slippers, socks, kleenex, hairbrushes, jigsaw puzzles. We also need back to school supplies such as backpacks, pencils, notebook paper, erasers, crayons, etc. Or we will certainly take a check or cash donation to help cover some of these costs. It is extremely rewarding to give of yourself! Let us not forget others who are less fortunate than ourselves.

The Lodge is looking for someone to take over the position of Esquire. Unfortunately, Ashley will be leaving in a month. We certainly appreciated all of her time and effort. Ashley has done a great job, and we are grateful for your hard work and energy that you put into this position. The Esquire is a main character in our important initiation process. This is an honorable position and a key role as a lieutenant. The Esquire coordinates with the Exalted ruler and leads the new members through the procedure process. If you are interested, please contact Curt Mahoney at 941-737-0273.
