During the darkest days of the Great Depression, President Franklin D. Roosevelt created the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) to save both America’s youth and its natural landscapes. From 1933 until 1942, more than three million young men (ages 18-25) joined this voluntary program. Living in remote, military-style camps, they fought fires, constructed bridges, and carved out hiking trails. In exchange for their hard labor, they earned $30 a month—sending $25 back home to support their destitute families.

Dubbed FDR's "Tree Army," these men successfully planted three billion trees, accounting for nearly half of the country's reforestation at the time, and established the foundation for over 800 national and state parks. When WWII began, these hardened, resilient workers traded their shovels for rifles. The magnificent park infrastructure and lush forests they left behind remain a powerful testament to what happens when a nation invests in its people and its environment.
