Last week we said the bay does not close in October. Here is the long version.

We wrote down what actually happens in Patchogue between November and March. What closes: the Fire Island ferry drops to selected dates, the beach club shuts, the lifeguards go home. What stays open: the theatre alone has six shows in November. And what is genuinely better in the cold.

Three things people get wrong about Patchogue in winter:

The village does not shut down. Downtown dining, nightlife, and the theatre are open all year, about a mile from the water.
The bay is at its best. Winter sunsets over the Great South Bay beat the summer ones. That is our opinion, but we have the photos.
You do not need a car. The LIRR runs year-round, and the station is about a mile away.
The bay does not close in October.

Hosting family this fall?

We wrote up an honest comparison: a whole house versus a couple of hotel rooms when relatives come to Patchogue. One hotel room is cheaper. Two rooms, which is what most families need, costs about the same as the whole house, and neither room has a kitchen, a washer and dryer, or a patio on the bay.
