'From the Ground Up' Community Garden, located in Downtown Pensacola, is a project of Innisfree Hotels corporate social responsibility program, The Hive. Here in our garden, we're planting more than vegetables. We’re planting a chance for kids and their parents to grow healthy foods that will sustain their bodies, as well as their minds.

🩵Lara (right) is from the University of Alabama in Huntsville, College of Science, Department of Biological Sciences. She came to the garden today with her friend Leighann.

Lara is a true plant enthusiast and, among other things, manages a huge greenhouse involved in outreach and research. She makes and shares teas, herbed honey and plants—and it’s been so much fun sharing with her over the years.

She successfully grew our Papa Sylvest mirliton in the greenhouse, hydroponically, but it got so big & wild they had to cut it down.

A few years ago, she gave some of our mirliton to her neighbor, who went on to successfully grow it in Huntsville, Alabama—and “made” bags and bags of fruit! 🌱💚

Today we sent Lara and Leighann off with cucuzza, blueberries and some blue butterfly pea seeds! 🫐🌱🦋

It’s always fun to share with you, Lara. See you both again soon! 💚

Second pic is with Leah from the Hilton at Pensacola Beach and me, as Lara had left me a bundle of love, including a Queen of the Night. It was during Christmas time and I was traveling so Leah kindly intercepted it for me!

Have you heard of a Queen of the Night? Leah also has a cutting, and we can’t wait for her to bloom!

Sharing the Garden

Lara (right) is from the College of Science, Department of Biological Sciences. She came to the garden today with her friend Leighann.

Lara is a true plant enthusiast and, among many other things, manages a huge greenhouse involved in outreach and research. She makes and shares teas, herbed honey and plants—and it’s been so much fun sharing with her over the years.

She even successfully grew our Papa Sylvest mirliton in the greenhouse, hydroponically! It got so big and wild that they eventually had to cut it down. That’s one of my favorite things about gardening: you share a seed, a plant or a little knowledge, and you never quite know where it will grow or what it will become.
