August leaves quietly.

The last long evenings of the month tend to make us notice the hotel differently: the cooler lobby in the morning, the glow of the bar at dusk, the dining room settling into dinner service.

September will bring its own reasons to visit. For now, there is still one more summer weekend to claim and a few nights when Old Towne feels especially good after dark.

This week in Shirley's Bar: a trio of house-made Mediterranean spreads, and a chicken alfredo flatbread.

The trio is roasted baba ghanoush, beet hummus and a roasted onion dip, with falafel and pita chips alongside. The flatbread comes garlic-rubbed under parmesan alfredo, roasted chicken and mozzarella, finished with a lemon-dressed green salad and shaved parmesan.

$6 each, Monday through Thursday, noon to 4 p.m. No reservation needed. Pull up a seat at the bar.

There is a point in every August evening when the rooftop earns its name.

The heat eases. The glass sweats. The brick roofs below lose their hard edges, and the sky starts doing most of the work.

20 West is six stories above Old Towne, close enough to recognize the streets and high enough to see the city differently. Come before sunset if you want the whole change. Stay after if the conversation is good.

The lamb shank comes off the bone with the side of a fork. That is the whole point of a braise run this long.

This week's dinner special: Slow-braised, tender lamb shank set over al dente rigatoni bolognese, finished with fresh herbs and grated Parmesan cheese. Heavy, in the way a good braise earns.

The Boiler Room is open four nights a week starting Wednesday the 26th.
Wednesday through Saturday, 5 to 11 p.m.

One thing worth knowing: the menu is being rewritten for September. If you've got a regular order, the next few weeks are your window. After that there's a new list to work through.
