Hot off the press! Checkout the feature article on Camp Daggett's 100 year history in this month's edition of Michigan History Magazine. Many thanks to Camp Daggett Historian Stephen Post for his work to document the rich history of this historic camp started by Post's grandfather Walter MacMillan in 1925. Alex Dailey, a Petoskey based freelance writer and editor, did a wonderful job capturing the significance and beauty of Camp Daggett's evolution. Here's to the next 100 years!

The Petoskey Middle School Outdoor Adventure Club is in its first year of operation at Petoskey. It is led by teachers Tyler Hallstedt and Julie Platte-Yurek. They said their mission is to get students outdoors to connect with each other and their local environment in a positive and safe way. Adventures have included hiking, snowshoeing, and most recently winter camping in Camp Daggett's back 40 open space. The adventures have taught skills such as fire building and safety, tent assembly and trail etiquette. This spring the group will go backpacking at Pictured Rocks and enjoy more outdoor adventures! Many thanks to Tyler and Julie for sharing your love of the outdoors with young people and choosing to explore Camp Daggett!

Zonta Club of Petoskey awarded grants to six area organizations for their work in the community to empower women and girls. During the 2025-2026 round of applications, 13 organizations submitted an RFP, requesting a total of $59,110. Zonta Club of Petoskey awarded grants supporting the following programs:

Camp Daggett is receiving $2,000 to restore the Frog Pond after it suffered damage during the 2025 ice storm. The funds will also be used to purchase microscopes and waders to enhance the STEAM program at the pond.

The Health Department of Northwest Michigan is receiving $6,000 to purchase support unique opportunities for both their family health and school health divisions. Funding will ensure women and girls have access to no-cost pregnancy tests, emergency contraception, and OTC birth control. Additionally, to break down hygiene barriers for students, the funds will be used to purchase hygiene products and tampon/pad dispensers for Alanson and Pellston schools.

The Manna Food Project is receiving $2,000 to purchase nutritious food and supplies for the women who participate in cooking classes in 2026 that focus on nutrition, food safety, and healthy meal preparation. These classes aim to empower women facing food insecurity by providing the knowledge, skills, and ingredients needed to make nutritious meals, supporting both immediate needs and long-term wellness. In 2025, SNAP-Education was cut, which was previously used to offer Manna’s cooking classes.

The Women’s Resource Center of Northern Michigan is receiving $3,500 to support a Sexual Assault Awareness Month community engagement event on April 9. Two nationally recognized survivor advocates, Samantha Stites and Dr. Danielle Moore, will provide a powerful, relevant opportunity for the community to engage in dialogue around sexual violence, accountability and healing.

North Central Michigan College is receiving the final $5,000 of a two year grant from Zonta’s Women and Children’s Fund at the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Community Foundation, to support its Career and Technical Education Enhancement Project (CATEE), which is expanding and modernizing campus facilities to better prepare students—especially women—for high-demand careers in healthcare, STEM, and manufacturing. This investment will help provide state-of-the-art learning environments that empower women to gain skills, achieve economic independence, and become leaders in their fields and communities.

Top of Michigan Trails Council – Kids Pedaling with a Purpose receiving $2,500 to assist in the purchase of a new fleet of hybrid bikes, helmets, trailer for adaptive bikes and side-by-side pedal assist bike for the 4th grade students of Emmet County. Kids Pedaling with a purpose operates under the Top of Michigan Trails. 4th grade students learn about the health benefits of biking and in the spring take an 8 mile ride to the Oden Fish Hatchery. In the past 9 years, the organization has provided over 1,000 Emmet Co 4th grade girls the opportunity to experience the lifelong benefits of riding a bike

In addition to these grants, Zonta of Petoskey gives each year a $2,500 grant to the Women’s Resource Center Northern Michigan to support a scholarship for women at North Central Michigan College, plus operating support for the WRC Northern Michigan, and support to remodel a room at the Safe House. The club also provides money toward the making and donation of mastectomy pillows for McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital, and a $1,000 scholarship yearly for the Young Women in Leadership program.

Grant recipients left to right: Sarah Ford, Zonta Club of Petoskey president; Kate Scollin, Kids Pedaling with a Purpose volunteer; Megan King, Outreach & Advocacy Program Director for Women’s Resource Center; Sam Johnstone, Jen Vollmer, and Jill Towne-Patton with the Health Department of Northwest Michigan; Julie Joles, Executive Director of Camp Daggett; Chelsea Platte, NCMC VP for Advancement/Foundation Executive Director; Jodi Haven, Zonta Status of Woman Co-Chair; Carrie Klingelsmith, Executive Director of The Manna Food Project.

Looking for a summer job that actually sticks with you? Hear it from Nate, one of our Camp Daggett summer staff, on why camp is more than just a job:

“Camp is a way of life and Daggett is the best framework for camp that I have encountered. There is something ethereal and indescribable about the comfort and support you feel in the community we’ve built. I was introduced to Daggett at eighteen on paid staff and it completely changed the direction of my life. I feel immense pride for our staff’s ability to positively impact the children in our community year after year.

Each day is packed with so much exploration, learning, and fun it will feel like a year. When it’s over, you’ll reminisce on playing beach volleyball as a team against another cabin, your campout where you stayed up a little too late burning marshmallows, and your second day when someone who was new a day ago is now your best friend and you feel confident to try your best in an unfamiliar place. In these memories you will find a home, I encourage you to build it."

Come for the summer. Leave with stories you’ll be telling for years.

Are you interested in working for camp but still on the fence? Hear from one of our own Summer Staff Members, Caleb, about what he loves most about working for Camp Daggett.

"Camp Daggett has been a constant in my life for years. I started here as a camper, with no idea of what to expect, and it became a place that has shaped who I am. The genuine and unique relationships I build with staff and campers every year are what drive me. Some of the most important friends in my life I met while at Daggett. While I may be tired one day, I know that everybody around me is there to support me because we share a passion to provide a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the campers. I come back for them; the campers. If you’re thinking about working at Camp Dagget, I’d say go for it; it is more than just a summer job. It’s a place where you will build lifelong memories and relationships. Working at Camp Daggett will allow you to grow and make memories that will always last, whether sweet or hilarious or a little bit of everything; they will stick with you."

If you want to join an amazing team where you can spend your summer making a difference in the lives of campers, meet lifelong friends, and have fun while doing it, apply today: https://www.campdaggett.org/employment

Did you know the adventure at Camp Daggett doesn't end for campers at 14?! Each summer, teens get to explore the stunning landscapes of Michigan during our Adventure Camp program. New this year, we are taking a group of older campers (ages 15-16) on a trip to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park!

After spending a few days together at camp preparing for the trip and participating in teambuilding, campers will embark on a three-day exploration of the stunning Sleeping Bear Dunes. They will hike through both woods and dunes with views of Lake Michigan, Glen Lake and the Manitou Islands. Campers will expand their knowledge of backcountry living during their three-night stay by sleeping in tents and working together to prepare meals on camp stoves.

If you have a camper who doesn't want their time at Camp Daggett to end, register for our Adventure Camp today! Spots are limited: https://www.campdaggett.org/adventure-camp
