As sea turtle nesting season begins, N.E.S.T. offers some do’s and don’ts

Sea turtle nesting season is underway on the northern Outer Banks, and N.E.S.T. (Network for Endangered Sea Turtles) is asking residents and visitors to help protect nesting sea turtles by keeping their distance and avoiding artificial light.

In recent weeks, N.E.S.T. volunteers have documented multiple incidents of nesting sea turtles being disturbed by flash photography, cell phone lights, flashlights, and people approaching too closely. While many people are excited to witness this rare event, these actions can disrupt the nesting process.

Sea turtles nest primarily at night and depend on dark, undisturbed beaches. When disturbed by lights or human activity, a nesting turtle may abandon her nesting attempt, return to the ocean without laying eggs, or choose a less suitable nesting location.

If you encounter a nesting sea turtle:
Stay back and observe from a distance.
Do not use flashlights, cell phone lights, or camera flashes.
Remain quiet and allow the turtle to nest undisturbed.
All sea turtles that nest on the Outer Banks are protected under the Endangered Species Act and are listed as threatened or endangered. Every successful nest contributes to the recovery of these species.

Everyone can also help sea turtles by turning off beachfront lights, filling in holes, removing beach equipment, and picking up trash before leaving the beach.

N.E.S.T.’s conservation work from Nags Head to the Virginia state line is authorized by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (ES Permit ).

Hello to all our Meant To Be guests and followers! It's been a minute since posting. We just celebrated the marriage of our son and new daughter in law this month. Congratulations Matt and Alyssa Baun !
We're here now, opening up Meant To Be. The decks have been water sealed, the chairs, swings and hammock are hung. We had our coffee in the screened porch this morning. What a good feeling!!!
This is rental season 2026 for us. We were told that most vacation rental homeowners will only survive in this market for 10 years at best.
We've earnestly given our all each and every rental season in providing a vacation home where our guests could "feel at home".
This year we have made the decision to finally begin to cut back on the number of rentals we offer each season. We couldn't be more proud to say that every week filled this season is with a guest that we consider "Meant To Be" family. Guests that have been vacationing with us from 2 to 20 years. We will open a few weeks to new guests. We currently have one available week available in June, July and September. We are no longer on vrbo due to the many unfavorable changes that were made to guest and homeowner when Expedia purchased them. We are looking forward to a special 2026 season. Last year our long time guest's daughter was proposed to on our top deck. Such a special memory for them and us!
We also welcomed back a new/old guest. Heather was a little girl when her family vacationed with us our first couple of years. All grown up with children of her own now, she wanted to return with her own family. She found us and returned 4 generations of family. They will be returning this year for two weeks. We LOVE stories like these !!!!!

Some happy house news for Buxton today, Wednesday, November 12 - the Williams’ family house that was in the ocean, in danger of collapse, is being moved today! 🙌🏽

From Mr. Williams: Notice to anyone in Buxton south of Cottage Avenue in the neighborhoods off of Old Lighthouse Road that between 8:45 and 11:45 tomorrow (Wednesday, Nov 12) the road will at times be blocked to traffic by a house being moved to Diamond Shoals Drive. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Once the house has cleared Cape Point Way, traffic can detour around by using Cape Point Way and Diamond Shoals Drive, until the house turns onto Diamond Shoals Drive.
