Mr. Larnell Baldwin, owner of .baldwins_shop & a Philadelphia native, started designing, sewing, and tailoring as a student at Overbrook High School. He graduated from the renowned Tracey Warner School of Fashion in 1978 and shortly after, began working at the Bleaker Street Design House. In May 2020, Mr. Baldwin’s front window on historic Fabric Row was smashed and some items were stolen. His neighborhood and friends from across the world were able to raise over $30,000.00 in less than a week— a testament to Mr. Baldwin’s lasting legacy in his community. Support the shop by visiting during their store hours to purchase a fabric or a hand-sewn mask.

It's time for our close-up! For the next few weeks, we'll be taking a deep dive into our rooms. First up, room #5 featuring some works from and one of our favorite prints from artist Jean Sariano!

It’s been a while since our last post and that has been intentional. It was appropriate for us to amplify others and we will continue to do so along with our efforts to further justice and change. During this time we have seen some new followers and to welcome new and old, the most important and appropriate post is not about us but about someone who means so much to us and . When we embarked on this off beat hospitality project it was rooted in community, creating a platform and space that was inclusive and helped highlight some wonderful people in Philadelphia. The idea and seed for this wonderful space we call The Deacon was planted by this amazing woman who went from our designer, to creative director and most importantly our friend for life. While times are uncertain, money is tight and change is upon us all..... we must take the time to ask all those who have interacted and supported us to take a moment to learn more about this amazing woman, her business and her project, Yowie Townhouse which in our humble opinion will provide a true sanctuary for many creatives, foodies, travelers and residents here in Philadelphia. Let’s support her, let’s support our community and if you can give.... GIVE. If you cannot, spread awareness and repost. I promise all those that take the time to learn more about Shannon and Yowie will be a little bit better off than the moment before they discovered her 🥰. Our first year would not have felt complete without the 3 events that hosted in our space. Between our Astrology Experience, her weekend-long Meditation Teacher Training and the CBD & Sound Bath Holiday Fundraiser that she hosted, she's given our guests incredible insight with a side of comedy. Seeing her on a regular basis is something we dearly miss, but we wanted to show our support for her. Shop on her online store and use the code DEACON and we'll match a portion of the proceeds (link in bio)Can we suggest her gratitude meditation? It may help to lighten up your day just like she's done for us over the past 12 months.

While we have all been adapting to our new lives, we took a little bit of time away from social to think on ways that we can positively impact our community. As we approach our first anniversary we're thankful to look back and reflect on the strong relationships and connections built through our Experiences event series at the Deacon. A mix of culinary, wellness, DIY and music inspired events led by local entrepreneurs and makers. Its time to support these incredible people more than ever and we'd love your help!
We'll be highlighting these businesses in our stories and if you support them please use code DEACON at checkout and we will be matching a portion of your purchases, gift cards or pre paid services 😁. Its a small way for us to give back and rally around one another while we're apart. We can't wait to be able to re-open our doors and continue this tradition of connecting through shared interest and discovery! We wish everyone a safe and healthy week! @ Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Welcome to the Family 🥰 When we embarked on the Deacon, we found ourselves immersed in the building’s history and the stories of its impact on the community. That set precedents for our design and business decisions and allowed us to reimagine the space both as a hotel and event space as well as a center for the community. When we came across this beauty (around midnight on an app ) which was the home of the ceramicists we fell in love with their bird feeder but couldn’t help but stare at the building they were in. So instead of buying the bird feeder and have it shipped made the trip to Providence, met with Peter and Jim (the creative minds behind ) and a friendship was born 😁 (and we came back with bird feeders, night lights and other gorgeous ceramic hand made goodies. A few more trips, some fun nights and a sleepover led to the purchase of the building which, like the Deacon will host guests, events, weddings, artists and maker community. Like the Deacon, “Dye House” will exist inside of a historic mill, formerly the Weybosset Mill and home to during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s and more recently the design studio and home to . Mills were and are an integral part of our countries and Rhode Island’s history and can’t wait to share it with you. We can’t thank Peter and Jim enough for being such great stewards of this amazing building and help create a community in the Olneyville section of Providence. And so it begins...... getting the band back together for this design and hospitality project. Shannon and I have been patiently waiting to share this with our friends and can’t wait to see the process begin.
