The baton used at is not just a racing tool; it represents tradition and legacy. Some of the batons at the event are custom-engraved with the team’s name, school, or year, and many athletes treasure them as keepsakes. For some schools, passing the baton at the Penn Relays is a rite of passage that connects generations of runners.

We’re off to the races! The 179th kicked off today at Franklin Field, and The Study team is excited to host both the athletes of the games and memorabilia from relays past. As the events carry on, we’ll be sharing fast facts and photos of the key items on display in our Living Room.

Let’s start with the bib and hip “numbers,” two crucial pieces of the race-day ensemble.📛 Unique to Penn Relays, all athletes wear bibs and hip badges with letters instead of numbers, allowing for more unique combinations and easier identification as the nearly 20,000 participants fly down the track. 💨

More to come as America’s oldest and largest track and field event continues this weekend!
