One of Tennessee's largest and most beautiful waterfalls is Burgess Falls in Burgess Falls State Park near Cookeville. Here, the Falling Water River drops more than 130 feet straight down into a deep rocky gorge, creating a loud, steady rush you can hear before you even see it. Partway down, large rocks break up the falling water, sending mist into the air on warm days. The cliffs around the falls rise high on both sides, making the whole area feel tucked away and wild. A hiking trail leads you along the top of the gorge with several overlooks that give clear, wide views of the falls. Down below, the river is calm in spots, and people often kayak or cool off in the water during warmer months.
