Dollywood Changes for 2015

Dollywood recently named several big changes scheduled for the 2015 season. This year marks the 30th anniversary for the park, and it is also introducing several new and exciting projects that families are sure to love.

The outside of the park will be getting a new upgrade. The park is making plans for a $5.5 million project to enhance the visitor experience. Upon their arrival at the entrance to Dollywood in 2015, guests will find larger and more easily navigable parking facilities, as well as, new modern trams to transport them more efficiently from their vehicles to the front gate. The new entrance and parking lot are part of the Pigeon Forge amusement park’s 10-year, $300 million plan of improving and expanding to increase the amount of fun activities that families can enjoy there. Other recent additions include their newest ride, FireChaser Express that opened last season.

Dolly Parton also plans to open her DreamMore Resort beside Dollywood in late spring.

Families looking for musical entertainment will find enough to keep them happy at Dollywood. The park is home to some of the most exciting shows in the Smoky Mountains, including the brand new "Rock the Smokies" show. "Dollywood’s Rock the Smokies" is going to be the brand new contemporary Christian music festival scheduled for the Labor Day weekend 2015. There will be stages placed in several areas around the park which will feature singers and performers from all across the country.

Walker Sisters Homestead

The Little Brier Gap Trail is located in the heart of an old mountain community known as Little Greenbrier. The Little Brier Gap Trail connects the area to the Metcalf Bottoms picnic area along Little River Road to the south. The homestead includes a cabin, springhouse, and corn crib.

This small mountain community achieved national fame when five spinster sisters continued to live here decades after the park was established. After the Great Smoky Mountains National Park was formed in the 1930s, they obtained a lifetime lease.

The Walker Sisters refused to sell their farm to the national park. They maintained their traditional mountain life into the 1960s when the last of the sisters died.

The trail is 2.6 miles round-trip and an easy hike. It is most easily accessed from the Metcalf Bottoms Picnic Area. It is an especially enjoyable hike in the spring when the wildflowers are blooming.

Autumn is both a beautiful and a busy time in the Great Smoky Mountains. The annual show of fall colors attracts many sightseers to the smokies area, especially during the last three weeks of October. During this season, vividly colored fall leaves may grab your attention, but don't overlook the park's fall wildflowers which bloom in profusion along the many roadways!

Why are fall colors so remarkable in the smokies? One reason is the park's amazing diversity of trees. Some 100 species of native trees are found in the smokies and the vast majority of these are deciduous trees which exhibit amazing colors.

For some suggestions on things to do in the area during the autumn color spectacular, visit Special Autumn Activities

Autumn in the Smokies

The awesome, breathtaking beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains, Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge and the surrounding area during the autumn color season is difficult to describe in words. The mountains are ablaze with brilliant reds, oranges, golds and yellows as the fall leaf season brings gorgeous color to the east Tennessee area.

Altitude affects the fall leaf colors. The color display usually reaches its peak at the middle and lower elevations between mid-October and early November. This is the area's most spectacular display. These elevations include such colorful trees as sugar maple, red maple, scarlet oak, sweetgum and hickories. At the higher elevations, the colors start as early as mid-September with maples, yellow birch, beeches, and cherry.

In addition to altitude, temperature and moisture also affect the timing of the fall color show. When the first frost occurs can affect both the intensity and timing of the trees' color. A dry summer can make leaves change earlier, and dry summers with a wet early autumn can cause brilliant, extended fall color. Learn about why leaves turn color.

Although there is no way of knowing exactly when the color will begin or how long it will last, there are resources online to help you know what is happening. You can visit the Southest Foliage Report for this information

Wonderful foliage color can be found almost anywhere within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the surrounding areas of Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, Wears Valley and Townsend. Highway 441 through the Great Smoky mountains National Park from Gatlinburg to Cherokee and the road to Clingmans Dome provide some of the best views of fall colors, especially long-range panoramic views.

The 11 mile loop road through Cades Cove and the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail in Gatlinburg are also well worth exploring. Some easy hikes to see good color are: Sugarlands Trail, The Walker Sisters Cabin Trail and Grotto Falls.

October and early November are busy times in the smokies. It is recommended you book your accommodations as early as possible. Call us today to reserve a cabin for your "Fall Foliage Stay": 1.888.477.8366.
