The Weight Of Freedom

Brothers...
remember this...
Freedom is a noble gift...
but it is never without weight...
To choose your path...
is to accept the stones you place upon it...
Your direction...
your labor...
your outcomes...
these are yours alone...
What you build...
you must uphold...
What you neglect...
you must answer for...
There is no shifting of blame...
no refuge in excuse...
no other hand to point toward...
This is the quiet burden of a free man...
to carry the full result of his choices...
whether they rise in strength or fall through folly...
Many desire freedom without its cost...
choice without consequence...
authority without accountability...
But the Craft teaches otherwise...
If you choose your life...
you must also own it...
If you shape your path...
you must walk it uprightly...
If you claim the right to build...
you must accept the responsibility for what stands...
or what fails...
So take up your freedom with care...
and bear its weight with dignity...
This is the Masonic way.

Anyone can stand beside you when life is easy.

When you're successful.
When you're laughing.
When the Lodge is full.
When the photographs are being taken.

Those moments attract company.

But hardship reveals Brotherhood.

When your world begins to fall apart...
When your marriage is struggling...
When your health fails...
When you lose your job...
When grief settles in...

That's when you discover who your true Brothers are.

Freemasonry has never been about collecting names on a membership list.

It's about forging bonds strong enough to withstand the weight of real life.

Our obligations don't end when the Lodge closes.

They begin there.

A true Brother doesn't ask, "What do I owe him?"

He asks, "What does he need?"

Sometimes it's a meal.

Sometimes it's a ride.

Sometimes it's a phone call.

Sometimes it's simply sitting beside a man in silence so he doesn't have to face the darkness alone.

And here's the beautiful part...

One day, the man carrying you may need to lean on your shoulder.

That's Brotherhood.

Not a transaction.

A lifelong covenant.

In a world that celebrates popularity, Freemasonry reminds us to pursue something far more valuable:

Loyalty.

Be the Brother who notices.

Be the Brother who calls.

Be the Brother who shows up.

Because someday...

You'll be grateful another Brother did the same for you.

Freemasonry has a way of changing how we think about time.

When we're young, life feels endless.

"I'll learn the ritual next year."

"I'll visit that Lodge someday."

"I'll call that Brother next week."

"I'll spend more time with my family when things slow down."

But one of the quiet lessons of becoming a Master Mason is realizing that time isn't accumulating...

It's being spent.

Every sunrise is a gift.

Every Lodge meeting is one you will never attend again.

Every handshake may be the last with a Brother you deeply respect.

Every conversation is an opportunity that may never come around again.

That realization isn't meant to make us fearful.

It's meant to make us intentional.

Say the kind words.

Take the degree team photo.

Invite the new Brother to sit with you.

Visit the older Brother who can't make it to Lodge anymore.

Call your mentor.

Thank the Brother who quietly keeps the lights on, brews the coffee, and never asks for recognition.

And when you leave your own home each morning...

Hug your spouse.

Tell your children you love them.

Call your parents while you still can.

Because the Working Tools teach us that life isn't measured only by its length...

It's measured by how well we used the time we were given.

The 24-Inch Gauge reminds us that every hour has value.

The Common Gavel reminds us not to waste those hours on bitterness, resentment, or pride.

The Great Work begins with the understanding that our most precious resource isn't money.

It isn't status.

It isn't titles.

It's time.

And unlike every other possession...

Once it's spent, we never get it back.

So don't wait for the perfect day.

This one counts.

Ephesians speaks of a love so wide...
so long...
so high...
and so deep...
that the human heart can barely hold it...
Yet every faith tradition has tried...
in its own language...
to describe this same immeasurable Presence...
In Christianity...
it is the boundless love of God...
In Judaism...
the Eternal One whose mercy endures forever...
In Islam...
the Compassionate and the Merciful...
whose love surrounds all creation...
In Hinduism...
the Divine Self that dwells within every soul...
In Buddhism...
the limitless compassion that embraces all beings...
In Indigenous traditions...
the Great Spirit whose love flows through Earth and sky...
Different words...
Different paths...
One infinite Love...
Freemasonry recognizes this universality...
It teaches that the Divine Light is not confined to one creed...
one nation...
or one tongue...
It shines on all who seek truth...
It calls every person...
regardless of faith...
to build a life worthy of that Light...
To understand the depth of Divine Love...
is to understand that we are all connected...
all carried...
all guided...
all invited into a greater harmony...
May you grasp...
as all God’s people should...
how wide the Love is that welcomes every seeker...
how long it stretches across centuries and cultures...
how high it lifts the weary...
and how deep it reaches into every wounded place...
to restore...
renew...
and illuminate...
This is the Love that Freemasonry honors...
not by claiming it...
but by reflecting it through charity...
brotherhood...
and the pursuit of Light.

I have created a Facebook group for Christian Freemasons and for Masons of every faith tradition. Its purpose is to demonstrate clearly and respectfully that Freemasonry is not a religion, yet it remains fully compatible with, and often deeply complementary to, all faiths that acknowledge God as the Creator of all things, regardless of the sacred name by which He is known. The group is titled The Builder’s Testament, it is a space where Brothers may share Light, strengthen one another’s spiritual walk, and celebrate the universal principles that unite us across both religion and the Craft.

The Circle and the Square
The Secret Hidden in Plain Sight

Every time you walk into a Lodge, you see two symbols that have become almost invisible through familiarity.

The Square.

The Compasses.

We've seen them so many times that it's easy to forget they're trying to teach us something.

But what?

The Square is simple.

It represents the world we live in.

Our actions.

Our choices.

Our character.

It's about living honestly, treating others fairly, keeping your word, and doing what's right even when nobody is watching.

In other words...

The Square teaches us how to become a good man.

The Circle is something entirely different.

Unlike the Square, it has no beginning.

No end.

No corners.

It reminds us of eternity.

Of the Great Architect.

Of the Divine.

Of the endless search for Light.

While the Square teaches us how to live...

The Circle asks us why we live.

One teaches conduct.

The other teaches purpose.

One builds the outer man.

The other transforms the inner man.

Neither is complete without the other.

For centuries, philosophers spoke about a mysterious idea called "Squaring the Circle."

Mathematicians tried to solve it.

Alchemists wrote about it.

Mystics meditated on it.

But perhaps they weren't talking about mathematics at all.

Perhaps they were talking about you.

Every Mason begins as a Rough Ashlar.

Unfinished.

Imperfect.

Still carrying the rough edges that life has carved into him.

The Square becomes his first teacher.

It reminds him to straighten what is crooked.

To measure his words.

To control his passions.

To become dependable.

Reliable.

Trustworthy.

But eventually...

Something changes.

He realizes Masonry isn't just about becoming respectable.

It's about becoming transformed.

That's where the Compasses enter the picture.

The Compasses don't measure stone.

They measure your life.

How far will your compassion reach?

How much patience can you extend?

Can your thoughts rise above your circumstances?

Can your spirit reach higher than your ego?

The Square builds discipline.

The Compasses build wisdom.

The Square shapes your behavior.

The Compasses shape your soul.

Many people believe becoming a better man means becoming harder.

Masonry teaches something different.

It teaches balance.

Strong...

But compassionate.

Disciplined...

But humble.

Confident...

But never arrogant.

Firm...

Yet merciful.

This is the real meaning behind "Squaring the Circle."

It's not solving an impossible mathematical equation.

It's learning to unite two parts of yourself.

The practical man.

And the spiritual man.

The worker.

And the seeker.

The one who builds with his hands.

And the one who builds with his heart.

Eventually...

The Rough Ashlar becomes a Perfect Ashlar.

Not because he becomes flawless.

But because every part of his life begins working together.

His words match his actions.

His values match his behavior.

His beliefs match his choices.

That's harmony.

That's balance.

That's the true geometry of Freemasonry.

The Great Architect didn't simply create a universe governed by geometry.

He gave us those same patterns as a blueprint for our own lives.

Every time you look at the Square and Compasses...

Ask yourself two questions.

Am I living squarely?

And am I reaching toward the Circle?

Because somewhere between those two symbols...

You'll find the man you're meant to become.
