👻 DARK TRAILS, OLD TALES… RAILROAD MARY
There’s an old Jellico legend about a young woman people came to call Railroad Mary.
The story places her near the railroad in the 1920s.
According to the legend, Mary left an unhappy home while she was still young and found shelter in an abandoned shack near the tracks. Local people are said to have left food and small necessities for her.
Then one day, Mary was gone.
The story says she died there alone and was buried near the railroad, in a grave whose marker was eventually lost.
And that’s where the ghost story begins.
On rainy or foggy nights, people say a woman can still be seen walking beside the tracks.
Some versions of the story even say small items left nearby later disappear.
There are no known historical records confirming Railroad Mary as a real person, so this one belongs to local folklore.
But fog, an old railroad, and a woman who never quite left…
That’s the kind of story that sticks with you. 👀

👻 DARK TRAILS, OLD TALES… THE VARMIT OF JELLICO
Jellico has a strange legend of its own.
Local folklore tells of a creature simply called The Varmit.
Stories describe something far too large to be an ordinary animal — long hind legs, heavy hooves, a broad body covered in hair, and claws.
Some versions say it moved on all fours until it was frightened or angry… then stood up on two legs.
One old tale says hunters were chased through the mountain until they reached the edge of the timber.
Then the creature stopped.
Turned around.
And disappeared back into the woods.
Another version says it was first disturbed when work in the mountains opened a cave that had been untouched for years.
Is there really a strange creature roaming the mountains around Jellico?
There’s no proof of that.
The Varmit belongs to local folklore.
But the next time the woods go completely quiet and you hear something heavy moving just beyond your headlights…
you can decide how badly you want to find out. 👀
