Two birds of the same color, yet worlds apart within—crows and ravens. While crows roam city streets in flocks, announcing their presence with sharp 'caw caw' calls during their brief 8-year lifespan, ravens wander the wilds in pairs, echoing deep ‘gronk gronk’ tones that carry the weight of their 30 years of wisdom. In the differences of their beaks, tails, behaviors, and intelligence lies nature’s subtle beauty—a true classroom, if only we choose to observe.

MAY WILDLIFE CALENDAR 🗓️

The wildlife runs on this schedule whether you do or not.

MAY 1-7:
Fledglings hit the ground. Robin, wren, bluebird — all at once. Don't rescue them. Oriole chicks hatching in the hanging pouch. Hummingbird feeder needs cleaning every 3 days now. Bat pups being born.

MAY 8-14:
MOTHER'S DAY WEEK. Deer fawns appearing. Alone ≠ abandoned. Fox kits dispersing — some leave the territory for good. Peak fledgling flood. Robin starting clutch 3.

MAY 15-21:
Firefly emergence begins. The lights come back. Turtle nesting peaks — she's crossing the road carrying eggs. Goldfinch FINALLY turns full yellow. Dawn chorus at maximum.

MAY 22-31:
Firefly peak. Fawn growing, following mom. Bat pups flying with the colony. Chimney Swift chicks climbing walls. Second broods fledging everywhere. Caterpillar supply fading — late nesters feel it.

JUNE 1: Fireflies in full display. Goldfinch finally nesting. Summer begins.

The yard doesn't slow down until August 🌿
