The Olive Adobe

The Olive Adobe A casually elegant cowboy paradise in the Mojave desert near Joshua Tree. Sleeps 6. Kick back, put your feet up and relax. Come.

'When I build my own place in the desert, I want it to be just like this.' That’s what people say about our home. The Olive Adobe is a comfortable, private retreat on 7+ acres, nestled behind terra-cotta walls. 50-year-old, gnarled olive trees, raised perennial beds and pea gravel paths surround the house and every room opens to the outdoors with sliding French doors. Lose yourself in a classic no

vel, gaze at the multiple species of birds from humming to hawk, discover your artist or photographer within. And after a long day of exploring the local rock formations and petroglyphs, enjoy a toast in fine crystal as you relax next to a crackling avocado wood fire in the outdoor fireplace. As the Milky Way slowly emerges directly above you, stargazing might just become your new passion. Inside, you’ll find spacious living and morning rooms containing an eclectic mix of cowboy chic antiques and mid-century modern pieces and collectables from our travels around the world. Mexican and Native American pottery and baskets, and colorful serapes create a comfortable, relaxed, 'put your feet up' elegance that makes this charming adobe feel like home. 2 bedrooms open onto a “secret” back garden with a delightful iron bistro table set for two next to the grape arbor. The front bedroom (the owners' personal favorite) is glass on three sides - a former porch - with access to the comfy porch swing facing west for sunset viewing. There’s even an outdoor shower when you really want to commune with nature! A fully equipped kitchen is waiting if you want to eat in. Colorful china and bake ware, heavy cutlery and bandana “napkins” make even a simple meal special here – especially when you eat it by the fire, outdoors, under the stars. Let this place make special memories for you! We’re only minutes from Pappy & Harriet’s Pioneertown Palace, but this canyon feels like it’s miles away from everything. Pipes Canyon is bordered by 35,000 acres of “The Pioneertown Mountains Preserve” to the West and 60,000 acres of federal land to the north. It’s isolated, and completely private. It’s like living in your own National Park. There are views of the sawtooth mountains, flat-topped mesas, and impossibly balanced boulders with miles of hiking and riding trails just out the door!! At an elevation of 4000 ft, the summers are cool (10 degrees cooler than Joshua Tree and 15 – 20 degrees cooler than Palm Springs) and winter often brings a dusting of snow. Whatever your passion, you will find new inspiration at The Olive Adobe in Pioneertown!

Last weekend the house was rented by a photographer and her client to shoot a print ad for a line of sustainable handbags out of San Francisco. The preliminary photos are breathtaking.... We cannot WAIT to see the final product and will share it as soon as it's been cropped and tweaked and retouched.

Jenna Alcala the photographer (www.jennaalcala.com) is incredibly talented. Very impressive work we've seen so far. The Olive Adobe once again proves to be extremely photogenic. It's magic is evident in the preliminary pictures below, taken during the shoot with an iPhone.

We were just selected by Airbnb and TESLA Motors to be the recipient of a Tesla electric car charger, soon to be installed at the Olive Adobe and made available to electric car owners who rent the house in the future. We're delighted to be positioning the property for electric car owners going forward. And the environmental impact of electric driving is very much in keeping with our own philosophy of minimizing our carbon footprint and treading lightly on the special land of pipes Canyon and the Mojave Desert.

Tesla drivers who stay with us will soon be able to "fill up" right in the driveway via the high power, 100 amp wall charger for about $12 from dead empty to fully charged. Pretty cool!

We just returned from Labor Day weekend at the Olive Adobe and the weather was sublime.... 80's during the day and low 70's in the evening with a very late-rising moon, so we saw billions of stars each evening at the outdoor fireplace. I'm building a fountain in the garden at the front of the house - with a HUGE terra-cotta lion's head attached to the garden wall as a "spout." You would think that the lion came from some fabulous villa in Florence, which is what we will probably start telling people, but in fact, I bought it online - it's made of some sort of resin material and I faux-painted it with artist's acrylics and it looks like... well, it looks like we imported it from Tuscany at great expense. The plan is to bring electricity out to that part of the garden (neighbor contractor Sean Leeds is working on that now with our gardener Martin.) Then I'll install a large terra-cotta pot under the lion's head and run a recirculating pump up the wall, spouting out of the lions mouth and into the terra-cotta pot below. So in a few weeks, we will have that constant trickling sound of water in the garden that we have been missing so much.

Pictures to come as the project progresses.

About a week ago we arrived home after dinner out and a juvenile mountain lion greeted us in the driveway. We mentioned the sighting to a couple of people in the neighborhood and it turns out that several people saw him over the course of a couple of days. He's MUCH larger than a house cat, heavily spotted like a leopard, with a long, bushy tail. He also has that languid gate like a house cat - as opposed to a bobcat which has a short tail and walks in more of a crouching position with rear legs longer than its front legs. Neighbors all agree that some of the rarer wildlife has probably come down from the mountains as a result of the recent fires. Then they're discovering that there are chickens and other small animals in and around our homes which provide a pretty attractive buffet. They certainly are beautiful.....

Will be installing the new (vintage) hifi at the Olive Adobe in about a week. 1964 RCA mahogany credenza cabinet, fully refurbished, lush tube-sound, includes a hook-up for your iPod or your iPhone so guests can bring their music with them on vacation. Plus, it's gorgeous.

We'll be doing our first raptor releases at the Olive Adobe on Thursday this week. Right now it looks like it's going to be three red tailed hawks and one American Kestrel, all rescues from LA area airports. The male American Kestrel is extremely colorful, with rust and blue head and wing patches and a spotted breast with very pronounced black stripes at the neck. It's a small falcon.

We've applied to the South Bay Wildlife Rehab, a non-profit volunteer organization that cares for California-native wildlife, to become one of their designated relocation volunteers, transporting rescued birds of prey from the Los Angeles area out to Pipes Canyon/Pioneertown to release them back into the wild. Looks promising. The organization rescues an average of 1000 birds a year, all needing new homes over 100 miles from the City where they are found. They are working with Long Beach Airport to capture and relocated red tailed hawks and other species. Read more here: http://www.signaltribunenewspaper.com/?p=17439

We are not far enough for hawks (they have too great a range and could return to the City,) but we could qualify for monthly owl and falcon release at the Olive Adobe.

We're liking these custom hatbands we're having made. They have a cowboy chic, casual elegance about them when we use them to tie up fresh, fluffy white towels for our guests.

Last week was full of clear nights and loads of shooting stars, some of which were so low it almost seemed as if you could reach up and touch them. The full "super" moon is rising directly over the rock outcropping behind the casita and it's farmed by Joshua trees when it first appears. Incredibly beautiful this time of year.

Gnarled logs of avocado firewood! It burns long and HOT and the smell of the smoke is sweet and lovely. I could not resist using some in the Weber grille and doing an enormous, 3" thick ribeye, which we sliced to serve five people - drizzled with olive oil and rubbed with some fresh rosemary from the garden. It was a HIT! It's our own version of bistecca Fiorentina (steak Florentine.)
