We're Mary Beth and Paul. Native Pittsburghers, after college we spent the next 7 years working and playing around the world. It was great but home beckoned.

Returning to Pittsburgh in 2009, we started Green Gears Pedicabs, a company offering rickshaw, and cargo bike services, along with festival groundskeeping.

By 2013 GG was thriving and it was time to pursue another dream! Inspired by the pending completion of the nearby Great Allegheny Passage, we purchased this building in 2014, intending to transform the historic South Side building into a hostel.

After 4 years of planning and red tape and fundraising, our dream materialized in 2018 as we welcomed the first of many kindred souls to South Side Traveler's Rest.

With wildfire smoke affecting air quality across Pennsylvania, we want to remind everyone on the Great Allegheny Passage to put safety first. 🚴

If you're riding or hiking the trail:
• Check the Air Quality Index (AQI) before heading out.
• Consider shortening or postponing your ride if air quality is poor.
• Take frequent breaks and stay hydrated.
• If you have asthma, heart or lung conditions, or are traveling with children, consider waiting for cleaner air.
• If you must be outside during smoky conditions, a properly fitted N95 mask can help reduce smoke exposure.

The trail will still be here when the skies clear. We hope everyone stays safe, looks out for one another, and enjoys the GAP when conditions improve.

One of America's Wonders... is right here in Pittsburgh. 🚴

Canton Avenue was recently recognized as one of the "Wonders of America" by National Geographic. It features an incredible 37% grade, making it one of the steepest public streets in the United States.

Every year, cyclists from around the world test themselves on Canton Avenue during Pittsburgh's legendary Dirty Dozen bike race.
