Did you know? Horses' tongues can be between 11-16 inches long, but most horses can only stick out their tongue 5-6 inches past their lips! The tongue includes over a dozen muscles. Some of these muscles are attached to the hyoid bones at the back of the jawbones, which then continue towards the shoulders and sternum, creating a connection between the tongue, sternum, and shoulder.

Did you know a gray horse can be born any color? It is often a misconception that a gray horse will be born black. Black foals that do not carry the gray gene are often born a mousy-gray color. A gray horse must have at least one gray parent. A fun fact about gray horses is they change over the years! A gray horse will look almost completely different at age 5 than they do at age 20. Gray can also be spelled grey. The University of California-Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory uses gray.

SO how do we tell a GRAY horse from a WHITE horse? The answer is: skin color! If the skin around the eyes and muzzle appear pink... it is most likely a WHITE horse. If they appear gray it is a GRAY horse. You can also tell if the horse is wet and looks pink rather than having a blueish tint, it is a white horse. Many people get the two colors mixed up! Gray horses have a fun array of shades such as dapple, flea bitten, steel gray, or rose gray.

Did you know many people get the dun colored horse confused with a buckskin colored horse? Fun fact! You can tell them apart most easily by their primitive markings. A classic dun horse has a yellow or tan coat with dark points and primitive markings. Primitive markings include dorsal stripes, horizontal zebra striping s on the upper legs, and sometimes a stripe across the withers.

A lot of dun horses have visible primitive markings, but all dun horses have a dorsal stripe, running from the poll to the dock of the tail.

Dark marks the same color as the dorsal stripe on the back of the horses ears are another marking to look for. The marks may involve only the rim, the rear of the ear top, or a distinct strip below the tip.

The dun gene is a dominant gene โ€œDโ€.

Did you know stallions/geldings usually have 40 teeth while mares normally only have 36? We can tell the age of a horse by their teeth using different techniques such as; looking at the angle of the teeth, how many teeth, shape, how long the teeth are, and the galvayneโ€™s groove. Today we will learn about the galvayneโ€™s groove. The galvayneโ€™s groove is located on the lateral surface of the upper third incisor. It appears first near the gum line at about 10 years of age. The groove extends halfway down the tooth at 15 years, and all the way down the tooth by 20 years. It then begins to move back down from the gum line as the horse gets older. This is where we use the angle of the teeth to help us determine age. Check out the pictures/diagrams! Did you know horseโ€™s teeth takes up more space in their skull than their brain does. No wonder some of them seem to only think about eating!

Do you know why horses stand nose to tail? Like scratching one another, mutual grooming is another way that horses can touch one another to show affection. Horses may stand nose to tail, side by side, using their tails to flick flies off of a friend's face. They use their teeth to rub burrs and w**d seeds off one another's mane and remove them from the coat, often picking at the debris until it's thoroughly removed. Social grooming is a trait horses share with many other animal species who use grooming as a way to signal comfort and affection for others in their herd!
