Special Alert!! I've got the updated scoop on all that's fun and "don't miss" on the island!
Let's start with food, because that's fun, right?
Need a burger? I gotta say Irie's island food And it's not just burgers, it's a cool fusion of beachy, Asian, deliciousness. Try the fish tacos, or the spring rolls. Both are killer. Dragon sauce? Yes, please!!! Don't ask - just eat it.
Crab Cakes: I'm crazy about a crab cake. I'll tell you that the very best places to get them are Seafood and Spaghetti Works (under new management, but still the same menu). I know, it's a weird name and yes, they have both seafood and italian food. But the crab cakes are to DIE FOR. More crab than cake. They're pricey but if you get them in a combo platter, it's more reasonably priced and you get to try their other tasty treats too. And, the spagetti ain't half bad! Spicy sauce, perfectly al dente pasta. Yeah...it's good.
The other place to have Crab Cakes is The Phoenix Restaurant and Bar. Elegant but easy going atmosphere with upscale offerings that are simply divine. The crab cakes come with a lemon aioli that is light, fresh and perfectly compliments the perfectly crabby cake. Their other food is wonderful and it's a sweet little spot for a romantic dinner.
Pizza: Well, there's the thing. Pizza is very personal...I mean it's hard to pin down what's great and what's not since everyone seems to have their own idea of what great pizza is. A lot of people like Gaffs, I don't because it's a bar and I just don't dig that vibe. If you do - I hear it's great, so check it out. Others like Dylans - but it's way down in Cinnamon Shore and after a super long wait, I thought the pizza was a beautiful concept, but bland as a preacher's bedroom. We always gravitate towards Pizzeria Port "A" because despite the "all you can eat buffet" setup, the pizza's really good. It's a fairly inexpensive meal where you can fill the kiddos up and still have a glass of wine or a beer.
Mexican Food: I know a lot of people like San Juan. No, I just don't. The quality is ridiculously inconsistent and the last time we were there, the food was cold, bland and just icky. We prefer Cancun next to Coffee Waves. The food is consistently good and they have the best enchiladas this side of El Paso. They are always packed at breakfast because they have awesome breakfasts too!
Seafood: That's why you're on the coast, right? There's lots to choose from. Castaways is good and always a good value. However, they've really cut back their menu so they don't have as many offerings as they used to. Trout Street is not only a good restaurant, but it's on the marina so the view is lovely. Very nice for getting your "sea legs". I know a lot of people like Tortugas, but I've had nothing but bad luck there - from over cooked and rubbery shrimp to poor quality steaks. So I won't go back. Lots of people love it, so if you're into it - give it a try!! Lisabella's Port Aransas - now there's a fabulous restaurant!! It's a bit more upscale, but the food is worth it. Check out their menu and then try the Mermaid Soup. It's fabulous.
