Next week you can watch pieces of Halley's Comet burn up over the Gulf. 🌠

The Orionids peak overnight on Wednesday Oct 21 into the early hours of Thursday. About twenty an hour under good conditions, fast-moving and often bright. Every one of them is debris shed by the same comet people have been recording sightings of since 240 BC.

The catch: the moon will be around 80% full that night and will wash out the fainter ones early on. So don't bother before midnight.

The move is to set an alarm for about 3 a.m. The moon's down by then, Orion is high, and the sky out here is genuinely dark. That's the window.

The water cools a few degrees, the bait moves, and the bite turns on across the flats and the jetties. Ask anyone who's fished this coast for twenty years which month they'd pick. Most of them say this one.

And when you come back in, you don't have to figure out where to clean them. The fish house is right here on property. Rinse down, fillet up, walk back to your site.

Put Thursday night in the calendar. ⭐

The Draconids peak Thursday Oct 8, and they're one of the few meteor showers that's actually better early: the radiant sits highest just as the sky goes dark, so there's no 2 a.m. alarm required.

Straight talk: it's a modest shower, maybe five to ten an hour. But the moon is barely a sliver that week, so there's almost nothing competing, and out here on Mustang Island there's no city glow either. Every one that falls, you'll see.

Bonus: Saturn is at its brightest of the entire year right now. That steady golden "star" in the east isn't a star.

Somewhere out there, people are digging out their sweaters. 🌴

Here it's 82 degrees, the Gulf is still warm enough to swim, and the beach has about a tenth of the people on it that it had in July.

That's Beachtober. The whole island leans into October (food trails all month, live music on Fridays, festivals every weekend), and the weather never gets the memo that summer ended.
