Drive the back roads of Calvert County and you'll start noticing them — eight-foot squares of color hanging on barns, farmhouses, and small businesses, each one painted like a quilt block.
That's the Calvert Barn Quilt Trail, Southern Maryland's first one. Every block tells two stories: the pattern itself, often chosen for family meaning, and the place it hangs, from multigenerational farms to local museums to the Chesapeake shoreline.
Nearly 30 hand-painted quilt blocks now hang across the county, from North Beach to Solomons Island, Chesapeake Bay to the Patuxent River — proudly supported in part by the Southern Maryland National Heritage Area.
