Dear Friends, announcing A NEW chapter! Ownership transition of the Palace Hotel is underway.
Some 20 years ago, John Gair went from Provincetown, Massachusetts (where he ran a seaside hotel) to Port Townsend, Washington to sail with a friend. Upon exploring Port Townsend his eyes landed on the Palace Hotel.
Love at first sight? Definitely intrigue. If you know John, you know he has an excellent sense of adventure.
John asked the then owners of the Palace Hotel to be in touch if they ever wanted to sell the business and building. Within a year they did and John moved to Port Townsend, rolling up his sleeves to steward a building built in 1889. Down the road John bought half of the Pioneer building next door and linked the two buildings to create what is now the Palace Hotel with 26 accommodations.
More than maintaining brick and mortar, John made it about people and creating something fun together. He recently credited the hotel’s success over last two decades to a great team. John means everyone - returning and first time guests, the local community, and especially, the staff. An amazing staff.
After 20 years, John Gair has decided to retire, sell the business and building, and pursue other adventures. He has more seas to swim! We toast John and appreciate all he has given to make it a great place, destination and work environment.
The new ownership is based in Washington, has local business and hotel experience, and has shown intentions to keep the hotel, staffing and things much the same. The hotel will change, as all things do. But, we believe it will be stewarded with care and we look forward to what’s next.
