Did you know there's a little piece of Portland history standing right outside our front door? 🕰️

Installed in 1925 to celebrate Hay & Peabody's 25th anniversary, the street clock outside The Francis was crafted by the legendary Seth Thomas Clock Company, the same maker behind Grand Central Terminal's iconic clock. One of only 80 street clocks ever produced by the company, ours is especially rare for its combination of mechanical and electric workings.

But time wasn't always kind to this Portland landmark. By 2017, years of wear had left the clock rusted and leaning, earning it a spot on Greater Portland Landmarks' "Places in Peril" list.

Determined to preserve this piece of neighborhood history, The Francis team helped lead a community-driven restoration. In 2021, the clock made its long-awaited return, freshly restored in its signature deep green and glowing once again after dark.

Today, The Francis turns 9! 🤍

For nine years, we’ve had the pleasure of welcoming you to our little corner of Portland. Nothing makes us happier than seeing our guests eat, drink, wander, recharge, and fall in love with this city the way we have.
