How did Portland jazz legend Mel Brown find out he was painted inside a secret room at Kennedy School? 🎷

Funny story: he didn't even know he was in there!

One night, bartender Kate was chatting with Mel and his wife, Shirley, at the Detention Bar and asked if they'd seen our Charlie Parker room.

They hadn't, so she showed them.

And there was Mel, painted right into the mural. Surprise!

The Testimony room celebrates Charlie Parker, musicians connected to his legacy, and Portland's jazz history. And Mel definitely belongs in that story. He's a local jazz legend and longtime Kennedy School regular.

Our heated soaking pool is tucked away in a private garden courtyard, and public soakers are welcome daily with a reservation from 10:30am–7:30pm!

And if you live in the neighborhood? You may even qualify to soak for free. 👀

Basically, you can come for the soak and pretend regularly scheduled life doesn't exist for an hour.

These halls have seen generations. ✨

Long before Kennedy School welcomed overnight guests, these hallways were filled with students and probably a few “I forgot my homework” moments.

Today, the adventure looks a little different (our History Department has confirmed that beer pints were not carried throughout the halls back in the day).

Same walls. Very different kind of field trip.
