Tonight is a special evening at Aurora Lodge’s Stated Meeting.

Monday, March 2nd - Lodge Opens

I am honored to present The Candlelight Charge — also known as On Yonder Book or the Canadian Charge — written by M.W. Benjamin L. Hadley, P.G.M., Grand Lodge of Maine, A.F. & A.M.

This beautiful and time-honored piece will be shared in honor of all who have been raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason since January 1st. It is not merely a recitation, but a solemn reflection — a reminder of the vows we take, the light we seek, and the responsibilities we willingly accept as Masons.

Without revealing its sacred particulars, this Charge calls each of us to look inward and ask two enduring questions:

Will we be worth something to the Craft… and will the Craft be worth something to us?

It speaks to fidelity, honor, charity, integrity, and the quiet strength required to live out our obligations in daily life — as better men, better citizens, better husbands, fathers, sons, and friends.

To those newly made Master Masons this year: tonight is for you. May the words rekindle the light first received and remind us all why we knocked.

Fraternally,
Guy Martineau, PM, MSA, 32°

On Friday, October 13, 1307, the Knights Templar were arrested under orders of King Philip IV of France. Accused of crimes widely believed to be false, many were imprisoned, tortured, and executed. Their wealth was seized. Their reputation attacked. Their brotherhood tested under fire.

History shows this was less about heresy… and more about power and debt.

But here’s what stands the test of time:

The Knights Templar became a symbol of loyalty under persecution. Faith under pressure. Honor unto death.

Centuries later, Freemasonry carries forward those same timeless principles — not as a continuation of medieval warfare, but as a continuation of moral warfare:

• Truth over tyranny
• Brotherhood over division
• Light over darkness

Freemasons do not claim to be the medieval Templars. But in our York Rite Commanderies and in our teachings, the Templar story lives on as an allegory of steadfastness and virtue.

Friday the 13th isn’t about bad luck.

It’s about remembering men who stood firm in their obligations when the world turned against them.

Loyalty. Sacrifice. Brotherhood.
