A couple of balloons stuck around for a few extra days after the big festival and floated quietly over the campground one evening just before sunset. You could hear the whoosh of the burner long before you could see the balloon overhead. Neat.

One great thing about northern Maine? The night sky. Not a lot of light pollution up here on the edge of the great North Maine Woods. Those are perfect conditions on a night like tonight when the Perseid meteor shower is expected to reach its peak. Turn off your outside lights, pull up a chair after sunset and enjoy the show!

According the an article in the NYT, the Perseids originate from the Perseus constellation, which is close to the horizon shortly after sunset and higher in the sky as dawn approaches. Early in the evening, the meteors will be somewhat faint but with long, colorful tails. In the wee hours of the morning, viewers may see more meteors, but with shorter tracks. If you catch any of those long, colorful tails with your camera, share them with us in the comments.
