Inside each letter in the word “Purcellville” are different images of town locations, including the Town Hall, Fireman’s Field, the Purcellville Train Station, the White Palace building, the W&OD Trail, the Nichols Hardware building, and the Magnolias at the Mill building. 👏

Built in 1784, the original structure at Heigh Torr Estate is over 200 years old! First owned by Quaker settlers, then used as a tavern during the Civil War, then turned into a dairy farm, and now a vacation rental property. 🌾 Feel the history and book your stay today!

And now we interrupt your feed with a story of Heigh Torr Estate’s history. 🎙

During the Civil War, well-known Philip Derry’s home, also known as Derry's Tavern, was largely given over to gaming, drinking, etc., and was a favorite rendezvous for the soldiery. Lured by lights and ladies, Confederate Ross Douglas entered Derry’s Tavern for an evening’s fun. Just as he was settling into a hard-bottomed Windsor chair, the Federals burst out of the basement and let him have it. The bullet went through him and the back of the chair. Then he was taken outside, thrown across his horse, and left to wander for dead. Having the good luck to end up at a friend’s, he eventually recovered.
