🚤 Ready for Boating Season? Make Sure Your Vessel Is Too! 🌊

Before you hit the water, bring your boat in for a free Vessel Safety Check (VSC)! Our Natural Resources Officers will walk you through all the legally required equipment and help make sure your boat (and trailer!) are fully prepared for a safe and fun season.

Why get a Vessel Safety Check?
• It’s an easy way to confirm you have all the Ohio‑required equipment.
• You’ll catch anything that may have gone missing during winter storage.
• Pass the check and earn your official VSC decal!

How to Prep:
• Review Ohio’s Required Equipment charts for your type of boat.
• Load your boat as if you’re heading out for a real trip.
• Bring it to a scheduled Vessel Safety Check event this spring. (They’re offered more frequently during National Safe Boating Week, the week before Memorial Day!)

Can’t find an event near you? Call your local Parks & Watercraft Office during business hours to arrange a time.

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary also offers Vessel Safety Checks—find your local auxiliary online.

Let’s make this boating season the safest one yet! ⚓

This week we want to go over the history of the Lonz Winery and what it has turned into today.

The Bass Islands earned the nickname "Wine Islands," and Middle Bass Island State Park is home to the historic site of Lonz Winery.

In 1807, Middle Bass and South Bass Islands, Green, Sugar, Ballast, Gibraltar, and Starve Islands were purchased for $26,087 by Pierpont Edwards, a Revolutionary War veteran and member of the U.S. Continental Congress. In August 1854, the Edwards family sold the islands for $44,000 to José de Rivera Saint Jurgo, who cultivated the land for grape production and winemaking. Jurgo sold Middle Bass Island in 1864, and in 1866 one of the new owners, Andrew Wehrle, established the Golden Eagle Wine Cellars, which soon became one of the largest wineries in the country.

The Golden Eagle winery expanded to include a dance pavilion over the wine cellar, and a subsequent owner built a 60-room hotel, the Hillcrest, in 1905. Both the hotel and the dance pavilion were destroyed by fire in 1923.

In 1926, Peter Lonz and his son, George, merged their own winemaking business, established in 1884, with the Golden Eagle Winery's remains. Despite the nationwide prohibition of alcohol, the Lonz business survived by selling bottles of grape juice with instructions for fermenting the juice at home.

Following the repeal of prohibition in 1933, George Lonz began rebuilding the winery complex. After a fire destroyed the structure in 1942, work began on the Gothic-style stone castle that became a familiar landmark for tourists and wine enthusiasts for nearly 60 years. In 1962, the winery complex added a marina to accommodate pleasure boaters. The Lonz Winery was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.

After the tragic collapse of the terrace in July 2000, the state of Ohio purchased 124 acres on Middle Bass Island, including the shell of the Lonz Winery complex. The building's façade with the iconic Lonz tower, built in the 1930s, was restored. In contrast, much of the winery's upper levels could not be salvaged, but the building's footprint is preserved as an open-air plaza. Historical wine exhibits are inside the preserved cellars of Lonz Winery. These exhibits feature winemaking equipment found on the property, some as much as a century old.

Welcome to Middle Bass Island State Park and another week of Park History Thursday.

This week, we start our journey exploring the Lonz mansion and all its history and beauty.

Located on Middle Bass Island, The Lonz Mansion was built in 1906 by island winemaker August Schmidt. Schmidt later sold the mansion to George Lonz, The Storyteller and Conversationalist, in 1926. Later in life, the mansion was turned into dorms for winery workers. ODNR completed work on the mansion at the end of the 2024 season and restored the mansion to its former glory. Rooms upstairs are available to rent on a nightly basis, and the first floor will be open for self-guided tours. It's been amazing to see the comparison of how the mansion looked in the past to how it looks today.

After seeing the news article about the Mansion restoration, Phyllis Bryant made a generous donation of drinking glasses, as seen in the last photo. These glasses were originally received and acquired by Charles Bryant Jr. on a Port Clinton High School Senior Class Trip back in 1953. Phyllis Bryant, his wife, reached out to us this winter to donate these beautiful and original pieces to be displayed in the museum for generations to enjoy.

If you have any items from the Lonz mansion or complex that you would like to donate, please reach out to Middle Bass Island State Park's office at (419) 285-0311. Any donation helps as most of the items were auctioned off years ago at a sheriff's auction, and the only original piece left is Geroges's desk.
