So today is time to reflect a bit. This week has been an interesting week because I have a big number birthday coming up in 9 months. I know that is really a long time away but then again it is closer than you think. I always celebrate milestone Birthdays with a big party and the next one will be no different. I already have started to plan for it. But the reason for my reflection this week is my future. How long will I live? How long can I really do what I am doing right now? How many more years can I still play softball during the summer? How much longer can I go out every Friday and Saturday night? I see other people my age and they have definitely slowed down and they have decided to be a spectator instead of somebody that participates. I know that eventually I will do the same but I am going to fight it as long as I can. Thankfully I am healthy and my family lifeline is long but you never know what can happen.
Going through life I have always done my best to live in the present and not the past. The past has shaped who I am but I will not go and try and relive mistakes that I have made. I refuse to go backwards and I prefer to plan ahead for my future. That is why I have had many thoughts this week because I started planning all of my winter trips. I am a planner but I also do a lot of spur of the moment things. I also have had a few business opportunities lately that people have asked me about but I have so far declined. That does not mean that I will not get into something else but I am looking at my future a bit differently now. In writing these columns every week it gives me an outlet to express and share my thoughts about my life and where it has taken me. It usually takes me an hour and a half to do every post and out of that is about 30 minutes of self reflection to decide on what I am going to write in this post. This is really good for me to really think about life and where it can take me. It is like a weekly self evaluation. Plus it reminds me of how happy I am to be with all of you. Many of you I have met in person and you have shared moments of your life with me. Some of you are in chapters of my book of life and some of you are just a paragraph and some of you I have never met but every one is very important. My job every week writing this column is to give you information on live music on Put in Bay plus give you something to think about. Live music is a great thing because it creates memories. A lot of songs tell a story that you can relate to. Songs can make you happy and they can make you sad. But when you hear a favorite song it will bring up a memory. Most times it will make you smile. But also make you think about yourself and life in general. Can reading my posts change your life? Probably not but maybe it will help you understand and appreciate what you have. So make sure that you are a participant in life not a spectator.

As you can see from this week's music schedule a lot of the venues do not have daily music scheduled. But that should not stop you from coming to Put in Bay. The weather is still fantastic and there is still lots to do on the island. Sometimes just taking a walk through the many parks on the island will do a lot for somebody's mental health. Or even finding a place to watch the sunset with somebody special can make a day special.

So the last 2 weeks I have written about winter on the island and last week it was a little more information on the artists that make the island tick. I really think the phrase that Put in Bay is the Key West of the Midwest is something to think about. WE are a smaller scale then Key West because we are smaller and as much as I have to admit it people in this area of the country are definitely different then those in Florida. But we all went to a different place to have a good time.

Now time for my thoughts of the week

Life is worthwhile if you LEARN
What you do not know will hurt you.You have to have learning to exist,let alone succeed. Life is worthwhile if you learn from your own experiences ... negative or positive. We learn to do it right first by sometimes doing it wrong. We call that a positive negative. We also learn from other people's experiences, both positive and negative. I have always said it is too bad that failures do not give seminars. Obviously, we do not want to pay them to speak so they are not giving seminars. But that information would be very valuable...we would learn how someone that had it all then messed it up. Learning from other people's experiences and mistakes is valuable information because we can learn what not to do without the pain of tried and failed ourselves. We learn by what we see, so pay attention. We learn from what we hear, so be a good listener. We learn from what we read so learn from every source, learn from lectures, learn from songs,learn from sermons, learn from conversations with people who care. Heck even learn from my weekly posts. That is actually my goal every week. To educate and make people think.

Next Life is worthwhile if you TRY
You just can't just learn, now you have to try something to see if you can do it. Try to make a difference, try to make some progress, try to learn a new skill, try to do a new sport. It does not mean that you will be good at something you try but try and do your best. You might just find something that you really enjoy. I never thought 10 years ago that I would be good at running a bed and breakfast. But I gave it a try and I found out that I am pretty good at it and I enjoy it.

Life is worthwhile if you STAY
Once you sign up for something, see it till the end. Don't stop halfway through. Make sure you complete the task

Lastly, Life is worthwhile if you CARE
If you care at all you will get some results, if you care enough you can get incredible results. Care enough to make a difference. Care enough to turn somebody around. Care enough to start a new enterprise. Care enough to change it all. Care enough to win anything you try.

Four powerful little words LEARN TRY STAY AND CARE . What a difference can you make in your life today by making these words to work.

The summer is ticking away but we still have lots of fun left to go. There still is a lot of time left to get away for a day or a weekend. You would be surprised how visiting Put in Bay can recharge your battery. I hope to see all of you soon.

So last week's post was about what it is like to live on an island. This week is going to be a short write up about the bands that I watch on Put in Bay. I do not have the time to see every band or solo performer but I will do my best to highlight some of the best that I have seen. But please go and check out some of the solo artists and maybe some of the others that I have not mentioned. They are all pros and very good.

I will list the band or solo artists along with where you can see them play and my personal comments of each performer

Casper I talked about him last year and my comments are still the same. He is one of the most unappreciated musicians on Put in Bay. He plays at Mr Eds solo and with the band Fun Buckets on Thursday nights. I do not think there is a song that he cannot do and do it well. Please check him out and make a request. you will be surprised.

Mike Mad Dog Adams He is an island Legend at the Roundhouse. He has been playing there for over 40 years. I probably see him 3 times a month just to watch the blowing of the conch shell at around 3:30 every show. You cannot leave his show without smiling or remembering a joke that you tell to your friends.

Paradise Island Another 40 year performer at the Roundhouse. There is a reason why because they pack the place every Wednesday. How many bands pack a place on a Wednesday afternoon. One of the few bands that do not play so loud that you cannot talk to the person that you are with. Plus lots of great dance music to dance to

Emilys Toy Box One of my favorites bands. They are from around the State College Pa. area. The lead singer is probably the most entertaining and engaging on the island with the crowd. When you see them, really listen to the lyrics. He loves to change the words to songs. I remember seeing them in Cleveland many years ago. They are a bit on the loud side but definitely worth seeing.

Kyle Smithers A few years ago I was walking by the Beer Barrel and heard a Pat Daily song. Well it was Kyle. I stayed for awhile and was impressed with some of the songs that he played. Now some of his songs are a little dirty but definitely worth having a few beers with on the Patio at the Beer Barrel.

Tobi Lee another Beer Barrel regular. I do now between her and Kyle they probably do over 100 shows combined this summer. Kyle usually first and Tobi second. Tobi is the lead singer of Mustang Sally. I really do not think she has a set list. She plays a lot of requests and she packs the patio at the Beer Barrel every weekend.

The Fulcos They are originally from NYC but now play out of Clearwater Florida. Also they do not have a set list. They do play some of the same songs every night but never in the same order. They play to what motivates the crowd. I just saw them play a song by Eric Carmen and the Raspberries from Cleveland the other day. They can play stuff from the 50s all the way to current stuff. They start at 9:30 and they do not take a break. I do not know of many bands that do that anymore. Most bands are play 1 1/2 hours 30 minute break the finish 1 1/2 hour set. Please see them before they outgrow Put in Bay.

Nick Brownell Originally from this area but plays in Key West a lot. He is a 1 man show and really puts his own spin on every show. Grab a burger at the Reel bar and enjoy his show.

Ray Fogg Plays at the Reel Bar most weekends. But also does a few select gigs at the Roundhouse when we turn the Whiskey light on and when we turn it off. Well I do not know how long he has been playing here but I know I saw him over 20 years ago in the upstairs of the Brewery. Most of his material is original and I know most of the words to his songs. Even though I have seen him many times and know his songs you will still find me there on some weekends and I always leave with a smile. He also has Cds of his original material.

Bob Gatewood Plays at the Reel Bar solo and with Calabash at the Roundhouse. Bob is now a good friend of mine. I wish I would have met him earlier in his career so I could have watched him play more. Calabash has now played at the Roundhouse for 40 years also. You have to be good if you keep getting asked back for that long. In his solo show he does some cool things that make it sound like he has a band behind him and also other vocals. He has lots of original songs that have even gotten on the radio. The last song that he does is always Friends of the Bay. It is the official song of Put in Bay.

Rusty Bladen plays at Frostys. I was a little skeptical when I saw him in person. I am thinking how can this guy be good. But to me he is your everyday musician and he is good. Polished and plays to his strengths. He has a great band that is fun to watch. You will not sit down when he is playing. You will probably dance or just sing along.

Pat Shepard also at Frostys. I have no idea how long he has played at Frostys but once again if you are not good and cannot hold a crowd they will not ask you back. He is both. Does some great Pat Daily songs alongs with others that make you sing along. I really think a Frostys Pizza a beer in a frosted mug and Pat Shepard on a Saturday afternoon go together.

So I did my best to make my personal comments on everybody playing at Put in Bay over the next few weeks that I have personally seen. I know that I have missed seeing many of the artists listed in this weeks music schedule but I only have so much time. I might try in future posts to comment on people that I have seen that I have not commented on so far. The artists that I commented on above are in no particular order of preference. If you are an artist that I have not seen please reach out to me and I will do my best to check out your show.

We had a great weekend celebrating the 250th Birthday of America. Everything went well except the rain and wind cancelled the fireworks. But a good time was had by all.

This week we are going to talk about what it is like to live on an island. Well many of you ask does Amazon deliver? Yes they do and the Miller Ferry brings it over every day. I cannot thank them enough for doing this service for the people who live and work here. Sam's even delivers to the boat but I have to go ashore every 5 weeks to get things that cannot get delivered. So this week I had to go to Sam's, the bank, Lowes, Walmart, Dollar store and get a haircut. This sounds easy but between the ferry ride and driving that is 2 hours right there. My car was so packed I could not get even 1 extra pineapple in the car. ( I serve fresh fruit every day for breakfast). Now they do sell groceries on the island but nothing is ever on sale when it comes to food. They all have to pay extra to ship things over. Too bad we do not have a bridge or even a tunnel LOL. But for all of us islanders this is something that we have to do regularly. You can buy a season passenger pass but not a car season pass. So anytime I take a car over you have to take advantage of it and fill your car to the brim. Now I do have a car on the mainland so if I have a quick trip I can walk over and drive my other car. Most islanders also have a car on the other side. But the real challenge is for the 300 plus that live on the island full time. That becomes a real test because the boat usually shuts down the end of December then does not restart till sometime in March. So you have to have a lot of freezer space to stock up before the boats stop running. Now the hardware store does have your essentials when the boat stops, but if you want anything special you need to stock up. Now you can fly over and bring a few things but it is cheaper for me to fly roundtrip to Florida then it is to fly roundtrip to Put in Bay. The other issue living on an island is the boat schedule. Your life revolves around the boat schedule. It seems like I am always trying to make the next boat. I sometimes forget that if I miss the boat I can get the next one in 30 minutes. Then while I am waiting maybe I can catch a quick nap. LOL Speaking of the boat schedule, unless you are staying on the island for more then 3 days leave your car at the dock when you come and visit. .Just use a cab, golf cart or walk. I have seen lines last as much as 3 hours long on Sunday to get off the island. If you bring a car you really need to plan and get in line no later then 9am to not have the long wait. But I would not trade living on Put in Bay for anything at this time of my life. This is my home and everybody that lives here are my family and friends. Sometimes the best time to visit is during the week because you can really relax.

So it is time to come to Put in Bay and meet my family. I really think you will like them. I hope to see you here soon
