Burn Ban Update for Sandy Hill Family Camp

Wicomico County has issued a county‑wide burn ban due to drought conditions. However, campfires at Sandy Hill are still allowed as long as everyone follows the specific rules in the order:

• Fires must be in designated fire rings, grills, fire pits, or fireplaces
• They must be attended at all times
• Before leaving your site or breaking camp, fires must be drowned and fully extinguished
• Recreational campfires are limited to 2 ft wide and 3 ft high

Everything else — including open burning — is prohibited during the ban.

Even after the rain the last couple of days we are still in a drought. Burn Ban Still in Effect for Wicomico County

From everyone at Sandy Hill Family Camp we would like to say thank you to those men and women who paid the ultimate price. We will always remember the sacrifices of our nation’s heroes.

In remembering the fallen, we also honor their loved ones: spouses, fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, sisters, brothers, friends. There really aren’t proper words, but we do live in gratitude each and every day for the precious gift that they have given to us.

This morning brought the news we had all been hoping wouldn’t come — our Bald Eagle visitor, the one who spent the last few weeks resting quietly along our riverbank, had to be humanely euthanized.

It hurts to hear, even when we know it was the most compassionate choice for him. He was struggling far more than any of us could see from a distance, and the professionals who cared for him made sure his final moments were peaceful and free from suffering.

For a short time, though, he became part of Sandy Hill’s story.
He chose our quiet stretch of shoreline as the place to rest when he needed it most. And in return, this community showed him nothing but respect — giving him space, checking on him, and quietly hoping he’d find his strength again.

Thank you to everyone who cared, who asked for updates, who kept watch from afar. Your kindness mattered. It always does.

He may be gone now, but the memory of him will stay with us. A reminder of the wild beauty we’re lucky to share this place with, and of how compassion is never wasted, even when the ending is sad.
