Multiple Sclerosis is a nerve disorder caused by destruction of the insulating layer surrounding neurons in the brain and spinal cord. This insulation, called myelin, helps electrical signals pass quickly and smoothly between the brain and the rest of the body. When the myelin is destroyed, nerve messages are sent more slowly and less efficiently. Patches of scar tissue, called plaques, form over

the affected areas, further disrupting nerve communication. The symptoms of MS occur when the brain and spinal cord nerves no longer communicate properly with other parts of the body. MS causes a wide variety of symptoms and can affect vision, balance, strength, sensation, coordination, and bodily functions.

Today is World MS Day. 🧡

World MS Day feels a little like the Olympics nobody trained for… except instead of medals, we collect MRI photos, medication side effects, and enough random symptoms where Google recommends an ER visit.

But today isn’t just about Multiple Sclerosis. It’s about the people who stand beside us while we fight it.

To the spouses and partners who became chauffeurs, medication organizers, emotional support humans, heating pad fetchers, and part-time therapists… thank you. You carry more than people realize.

To the families and friends who stay when plans change, fatigue wins, or our legs decide they suddenly downloaded the wrong software update… thank you for loving us through the unpredictability.

To the doctors, nurses, infusion staff, therapists, researchers, and advocates, thank you for continuing to push for better treatments, better answers, and one day… a cure. You are changing lives, even on the days you don’t get to see it.

And to every person living with MS: You are stronger than the world knows. Some days surviving is the victory. Some days thriving is. Both count. MS may affect our bodies… but it does not get to define our humor, our purpose, our relationships, or our fight. Today we raise awareness. Tomorrow we keep showing up with Moxie.

I can definitely relate to this! You never know whether it’s MS related or not, or where your MS will take a simple infection. We have to be on our toes with our health! 🧡

When Christina Applegate was hospitalized for a kidney infection, it highlighted a hidden danger most people never consider. For those living with multiple sclerosis, a simple infection becomes a serious medical emergency. MS attacks the protective covering around nerve fibers, disrupting communication between brain and body. This leaves patients with compromised immune systems and bodies already fighting a daily battle just to function normally.

A kidney infection starts as bacteria climbing from the bladder into the kidneys, causing intense pain, high fever, and vomiting. In healthy people, antibiotics usually handle it. But for MS patients, infections trigger devastating flare-ups that can worsen symptoms permanently. The stress on an already vulnerable system can accelerate nerve damage and land someone in the hospital fighting for stability they may never fully regain.

Research shows over 30% of MS relapses are linked to infections, making this a common threat disguised as routine illness. Early warning signs like painful urination, fever, or back pain should never be ignored, especially by those with chronic conditions. If someone with Christina Applegate's resources and medical access ends up hospitalized from a kidney infection, imagine the risk for everyday patients who might brush off symptoms. This serves as a crucial reminder that chronic illness changes everything, turning minor health issues into major medical emergencies requiring immediate attention.
