If you're looking for a spectator view at the end of your hike, it's hard to beat this one! It's a beautiful drive, less than 45 minutes from where we are located.

One of the most spectacular viewpoints in South Dakota is Black Elk Peak, a mountain summit that rises high above the Black Hills and offers some of the most expansive views in the American Midwest. Standing 7,242 feet above sea level, Black Elk Peak is the highest point in South Dakota and the highest summit east of the Rocky Mountains in the United States. The hike to the top winds through pine forests, past massive granite formations, and across open ridges where the scenery becomes more impressive with every step. At the summit, visitors are greeted by a historic stone fire tower built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, a rugged structure that makes the mountaintop feel even more dramatic. Climbing the stone steps reveals sweeping panoramic views stretching across the Black Hills and far beyond. On exceptionally clear days, it is possible to see into Wyoming, Nebraska, and Montana from the summit. The tower served as a fire lookout until 1967 and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Combining fascinating history, beautiful hiking, and one of the finest views in the region, Black Elk Peak is a destination that truly rewards the journey to reach it.
