Planning a trip to Badlands National Park this winter season? While summer is the most popular time to visit, the Badlands are beautiful all year long! Here are some activities suited for the chilly temps:
🏠Visit the Ben Reifel Visitor Center: Start your trip here to watch the park film, browse the Badlands National History Association store, and check in with Park Rangers for current conditions. Rangers can provide the latest updates on weather, trail safety, and winter preparedness. Temperatures and winds can be extreme this time of year—be sure to check the forecast and plan accordingly.
🦬 Wildlife Watching: In winter you’ll often spot bison, bighorn sheep, and other wildlife roaming the snow-covered prairie and Badlands buttes.
🌌 Stargazing: With shorter days, there are more opportunities for dark skies! If you’re lucky, you might even catch the Aurora Borealis, aka the Northern Lights.
🥾 Winter Hiking: A stroll through the Badlands on a snowy day is like walking through a winter wonderland. If planning to hike in the Badlands during winter, come prepared with thermal layers, waterproof hiking boots with good grip, hats, gloves, and a well-insulated jacket.
