Our campus utilizes 19 acres with 27 historic buildings, right on the shore of the otherwise undeveloped Sagamore Lake. We offer daily tours and host a variety of overnight programs. Our season spans from late May to mid October. Stay tuned for off-season educational tidbits, Sagamore updates, and the 2022 program line-up! Join Peggy Lynn this Wednesday, September 9, for an evening of music inspired by the women of the Adirondacks.

A singer, songwriter, and educator, Peggy brings these stories to the stage through song, sharing the comical, poignant, and sometimes overlooked experiences of Adirondack women. Her album "Adirondack Woman" is a collection of ballads about North Country women and the lives they lived.

Peggy will share her music and stories Wednesday evening at Sagamore for the final concert of the Summer Concert Series.

Traditional Arts Demonstrator: Canoe Building

Pat Smith has a remarkable ability to spark curiosity about traditional canoe building, from the craftsmanship of these wooden boats to the stories and history behind the craft. This week, Pat shared his knowledge and experience, walking through the materials, tools, and techniques used to build them, along with stories from the workshop and the history of the craft in the North Country. His dedication to preserving and sharing this knowledge is a testament to the generosity, skill, and spirit he brings to every demonstration.

“I enjoy this because I get to enjoy the tradition and history,” Pat said. “It’s a showcase for me to the public when tours come in. Ninety-nine percent don’t have an idea that this is what a canoe was back in the day.”

For Pat, the setting is part of what makes sharing this craft so meaningful. “It’s a beautiful setting. I love the history, the buildings, and the heritage of the Great Camp.”

In 1997, the Adirondack Boat Building School opened its doors, bringing together skilled craftspeople to share the traditions of Adirondack boatbuilding.

The school offered hands-on instruction in classic cedar-canvas canoe restoration, paddle making, canoe construction, building Rushton’s Wee Lassie canoe, and constructing tandem and solo cedarstrip canoes, among other traditional boatbuilding skills.

This week, Pat is back at Sagamore sharing his knowledge and experience through a special canoe building demonstration.

Throwback Thursday: Exploring the Archives

What once filled the pages of Sagamore’s 1987 program catalog is still something you can experience today. The Adirondack Great Estates Tour & Vacation Adventure invited participants to an “unforgettable immersion” into the history, current events, and natural environment of the Adirondacks. The program included guided tours of five Great Camps: Sagamore, Uncas, Pine Knot, Eagle Island, and Topridge.

The program offered a chance to see these remarkable places, hear from guest lecturers, enjoy boat and scenic tours, take part in outdoor activities, and relax at Sagamore.

Often, you can hear the loons calling as they frequent Sagamore Lake. Yesterday, a loon family offered a beautiful social display on the water.

This year, Great Camp Sagamore celebrated 40 years of Grands Camp! Continuing the tradition of bringing grandparents and grandchildren together to make memories, discover something new, and share time in a place that invites curiosity and connection.

Across two sessions, there were plenty of ways to explore Sagamore together. They paddled the lake, followed trails, explored nature, got creative, learned new skills, and took on adventures from the Polar Bear Plunge to Creativity Night, Kids Club, and the Young Historians Discovery Tour.

Along the way, they explored nature with George Schoolyard Naturalist Steele, created art with Deb Murphy, Kristin Miller & Pam Hummel, learned to juggle with Marshall Savitt, and enjoyed a moving concert with Peggy Lynn. Campers also had an exciting night of barn dancing with John Kirk & Trish Miller, Peggy Lynn, and learned the art of blacksmithing with David Woodward. The fun continued into Family Camp with Josh Clevenstine, Ashley Clevenstine, Oona Grady & James Gascoyne sharing Adirondack songs & stories around the campfire.

A special thank you to our program staff for all the care, creativity, and energy they brought to these two sessions, and to every grandparent and grandchild who joined us this summer and made so many memorable moments together. We’re grateful you shared them with us.
