Did you know? 📜 August holds a massive piece of Raton history!
On August 18, 1846, General Stephen W. Kearny and his Army of the West marched right through Raton Pass along the Santa Fe Trail. He was on his way to claim New Mexico during the Mexican-American War—entering Santa Fe without firing a single shot!
Raton has always been the true Gate City to the Southwest! 🌄✨

Morning light hits different at 6,600 feet.
Standing up on Goat Hill watching the sun crest right over Johnson Mesa as Raton wakes up below. The sky turns deep amber and soft pink, painting the wide open northern New Mexico plains in pure gold. Nothing quite matches the stillness up here before the rest of the world gets moving.
Happy Sunday from Raton—hope your week starts off just as bright! ☀️ Mountain mornings never get old.

Ever wondered who Colfax County is named after—and how Raton fits into the story? 🎩🏛️
Here is a quick history snapshot of Schuyler Colfax and his connection to our town:
Who Was Schuyler Colfax?
* U.S. Vice President: Served as the 17th Vice President of the United States under Ulysses S. Grant (1869–1873).
* Speaker of the House: Led the House of Representatives through pivotal years during the Civil War and Reconstruction (1863–1869).
* A Key Figure in History: A Radical Republican who fought against slavery and helped pass the 13th Amendment.
The Connection to Raton:
* 1869: The New Mexico territorial legislature created a new county out of Mora County and named it Colfax County in honor of the Vice President-elect.
* 1897: Following a regional referendum, Raton became the official County Seat!
* Today: Raton remains the administrative heart of the county, anchored by our iconic 1936 Art Deco Colfax County Courthouse.
Next time you pass by the courthouse, you’re looking at a piece of history tied straight to a 19th-century Vice President! 📜✨
