One of our absolute biggest anxieties as property owners is the power going out. Even though it’s only happened twice in the last 5 years, and has lasted max 4 hours, we know how concerning it can be for guests when the room goes dark. We’ve got a stash of candles, flashlights, and solar powered lights on hand but hadn’t quite cracked the code on something that could be turned on, stay bright for hours, and make a room feel cozy but illuminated. Enter this brilliant little lantern from BALMUDA USA — we’re going to keep these charged up and ready if a power line unexpectedly goes down 💡

Week 3 of our photo series showcasing our favorite parts of the motel: the sauna.

It’s starting to feel like fall in the evenings, which means it’s about to get a lot more use. If you haven’t found it yet, it’s tucked around the corner from Room 1 — a cedar barrel sauna that’s open to all guests, first come, first serve. Two people fit comfortably, four if you like each other. And once the leaves come down, you get a view of the Catskills while you sweat.

Robes are in the vending room. Help yourself.

Some rooms are for sleeping. These two are for staying in.

Rooms 9 and 10 — our King Social Suites — are the biggest rooms we have, up on the second floor of the old owner’s residence. We almost split the space into three rooms. We’re glad we didn’t.

Each has a propane fireplace that lights at the push of a button, a private balcony with the best Catskill views on the property, and an L-shaped lounge we built ourselves that hides two XL twin beds — so the kids come too.

Room 10 opens to the upper yard and welcomes dogs. Week two of our photo series. More next week.

We had the pleasure of hosting Meg and Liv, two incredibly talented photographers, this month at the Motel. We’ll be posting photos each week and included some backstory about how each room and outdoor space came together. The best part is that they managed to captured so many of our favorite local spots. Late May at the Reclaimed Motel. The flowers just opened up, the sky put on a show, and summer is officially here. We still have rooms open for June and July — if you've been putting off a Hudson Valley trip, this is your sign.

Every time we’re at the motel, we’re pleasantly surprised to see new wildflowers cropping up. Almost makes our epic battle with mugwort worth it!

Introducing our latest project…
And our most DIY one yet! But there’s nothing vintage about our 3-week-old baby, Verdun, or “Verdy”. She was born on Feb 6, just down the road at Northern Dutchess Hospital, where Jared was also introduced to the world. We’re so grateful to our excellent motel team for holding down the fort while we’ve been at home with lil Verdy.

Being new parents has us thinking about travel and accommodation with a baby, and we will by applying this new lens to the motel. If you have any preferred products or experiences as a mom or dad, we’d love to hear about what would make your travel with tots more enjoyable!
