Happy !! These incredible predators command presence not only for their survival and the survival of their prides, but also to ensure a healthy balance of the delicate ecosystems they inhabit. While numbers of this iconic keystone species are decreasing throughout wilderness areas in Africa, their importance remains just as strong. Today and every day, we celebrate the beauty, strength, and resilience that lions represent.

Below are a few local projects in East and Southern Africa working to ensure the safety and health of their local populations:

Today is the first ever ! A day started by African Bush Camps to celebrate Africa’s wildlife and people.

2020 has definitely been a year no one expected, and it has been especially hard on ecotourism sectors throughout the world. Conservation and community organizations in Africa have experienced one of their most trying times, as the lack of travelers on safari has created a massive loss in funding and resources. Wilderness areas and the wildlife they safeguard are incredibly important to local economies, and with this interdependent relationship being strained over the past year, many of these organizations and projects are in need of support.

While our global community has experienced such loss this year, this Thanksgiving holiday definitely highlights so many reasons we have to be grateful. One of those bring the teams working hard on the ground throughout sub-Saharan Africa to uplift and protect local communities and wilderness areas. We understand that this is a difficult time for many, but if you have the means and would like to offer your support, below are a few organizations that would welcome your donation.

Conservation South Luangwa - CSL (Zambia’s South Luangwa): Purchase the Cook and Conserve e-cookbook and help protect and save South Luangwa’s wildlife and natural resources and uplift the Mfuwe community.

The Good Work Foundation (Greater Kruger National Park, South Africa): GWF is reimagining education and working to bridge the digital divide in the rural areas surrounding the Greater Kruger National Park.

Empowers Africa (sub-Saharan Africa): Empowers Africa is an organization that raises funds for a wide range of community and conservation programs across the continent.

Nourish (Greater Kruger National Park, South Africa): Nourish is an an organization that is working to mitigate poaching along the Kruger National Park boundaries through addressing poverty through education, agriculture, and ecotourism initiatives.

Ewaso Lions (Samburu, Kenya): Ewaso is an organization that is conserving lions in Northern Kenya’s Samburu Reginon by promoting the coexistence between people wildlife.

The Safari Collection Footprint Foundation (Kenya): A foundation created by The Safari Collection that supports a diverse range of conservation, health and education projects across Kenya which benefit the wildlife, wilderness, and local communities

While we wish that the story of 2020 was a different one, we do look forward to a brighter future! After my visit to Kenya earlier this month, and with the news of vaccines on their way next year, we're hopeful for 2021 and the rebound of travel in Africa.

Happy World Safari Day and best wishes to you and your loved ones this Thanksgiving holiday!

After 9 months of waiting, we’re finally back traveling again. It’s been over a year since Mandy and I were last on safari, which is the longest we’ve been away since the continent captured our heart over a decade ago. While traveling right now is undoubtedly different, I’m super excited to be heading to Kenya and its vast wilderness areas.

The goal of this trip is to personally experience and document what its like to travel internationally and to visit a number of lodges in Kenya’s Maasai Mara so that we’re able to speak upon the updated measures accommodations and local airlines have implemented to create as safe of a travel experience as possible.

Mandy and I believe that it is super important for us to have this firsthand knowledge, so that we can share with our clients how best to prepare for the long haul flights to Africa, how to navigate new immigration and customs policies, and speak upon the safari experience now that countries in Africa have reopened their borders.

Being on safari is unique in that it gets you outside and into remote wilderness areas where you naturally social distance, and I can’t wait to feel my feet and soul grounded in the African bush again after being away for so long. Internet access might be limited over the next few weeks, but I hope to share some of my experiences as I criss-cross Kenya’s famous Maasai Mara.

With new safety measures and standards in place, countries in Africa are beginning to open their borders after their swift shut downs earlier this year.

Kenya has always been one of our favorite countries to visit for many, many reasons, one being the person pictured above, Moses Kaleku. We met Moses years ago while visiting The Safari Collection’s family of lodges in some of Kenya’s most beautiful and scenic wilderness areas. We fell for Moses’ adventurous and kind spirit right away, and have enjoyed many safaris with him since.

If traveling fits within your comfort zone, it is a unique time to explore Kenya while visitor numbers are low and the Great Migration is making its last round through the Mara’s vast plains and river systems. If Giraffe Manor happens to be on your bucket list, including time here along with Sala’s Camp in the Maasai Mara is an incredible combination!

Kenya’s and The Safari Collections’ incredible guides, like Moses, are ready and waiting to share the magic and beauty of Kenya with you! Your tourist dollars will go such a long way in helping jumpstart local economies in communities surrounding these important wilderness areas and drive funds to important conservation work!

What an incredible scene across the Jao floodplains!

The 2020 flood in Botswana’s Okavango Delta has wiped away last years severe drought and transformed the Delta back into a watery oasis. We cannot wait until we can get out there and explore again! The Jao Reserve Wilderness Safaris
