Today is the first ever ! A day started by African Bush Camps to celebrate Africa’s wildlife and people.
2020 has definitely been a year no one expected, and it has been especially hard on ecotourism sectors throughout the world. Conservation and community organizations in Africa have experienced one of their most trying times, as the lack of travelers on safari has created a massive loss in funding and resources. Wilderness areas and the wildlife they safeguard are incredibly important to local economies, and with this interdependent relationship being strained over the past year, many of these organizations and projects are in need of support.
While our global community has experienced such loss this year, this Thanksgiving holiday definitely highlights so many reasons we have to be grateful. One of those bring the teams working hard on the ground throughout sub-Saharan Africa to uplift and protect local communities and wilderness areas. We understand that this is a difficult time for many, but if you have the means and would like to offer your support, below are a few organizations that would welcome your donation.
Conservation South Luangwa - CSL (Zambia’s South Luangwa): Purchase the Cook and Conserve e-cookbook and help protect and save South Luangwa’s wildlife and natural resources and uplift the Mfuwe community.
The Good Work Foundation (Greater Kruger National Park, South Africa): GWF is reimagining education and working to bridge the digital divide in the rural areas surrounding the Greater Kruger National Park.
Empowers Africa (sub-Saharan Africa): Empowers Africa is an organization that raises funds for a wide range of community and conservation programs across the continent.
Nourish (Greater Kruger National Park, South Africa): Nourish is an an organization that is working to mitigate poaching along the Kruger National Park boundaries through addressing poverty through education, agriculture, and ecotourism initiatives.
Ewaso Lions (Samburu, Kenya): Ewaso is an organization that is conserving lions in Northern Kenya’s Samburu Reginon by promoting the coexistence between people wildlife.
The Safari Collection Footprint Foundation (Kenya): A foundation created by The Safari Collection that supports a diverse range of conservation, health and education projects across Kenya which benefit the wildlife, wilderness, and local communities
While we wish that the story of 2020 was a different one, we do look forward to a brighter future! After my visit to Kenya earlier this month, and with the news of vaccines on their way next year, we're hopeful for 2021 and the rebound of travel in Africa.
Happy World Safari Day and best wishes to you and your loved ones this Thanksgiving holiday!
