After Mr. And Mrs. Fox’s only daughter, Inez, married and moved away, they invited a young teacher by the name of Allen Turnipseed to board with them. Allen had recently landed a job at the nearby Sabin School after teaching throughout Richland County.

After living with the Fox’s for some time, Allen announced his engagement. Upon hearing the news, Mr. and Mrs. Fox offered to sell Allen and his new wife Hettie the property.

Shortly after moving to the Fox homestead, Allen and Hettie Turnipseed built a house of their own. Hettie, being a skilled artist, drew the plans for the house herself which included seven gables, plate glass windows from France, and Georgia pine wood. One of the most impressive features of the house was the inclusion of running water provided by the natural springs on the property.

To get water to the house a long pipe was run from the base of spring. Water that went unused would continue to flow to a trough along the roadside before ending up in a nearby stream.

This water trough along the roadside became a popular stop for travelers - to water horses, fill their radiators, or just get a cold drink of fresh spring water.

The outstanding springs, beautiful house, and the Turnipseed's community water trough earned the property a nickname--The Water Villa!

Enjoy these photos of our Water Villa cabin while it was being constructed and what it looks like today.

The Mill Creek Cabins property is rich with history that has inspired and shaped our cabins. We want to share some of this history with you, and a look back to when Mill Creek Cabins began to take shape.

The story begins in the 1800’s with a 'very hospitable' couple known as Mr. And Mrs. Fox. Israel and Martha were among the first residents of the Sylvan area in Richland County, settling here sometime in the 1850's. The Fox’s home was built on the property along the road now known as County Highway E. This was a popular path for travelers whose horses enjoyed the creek water on their travels.

The Fox house had two large dormer windows overlooking the road along Mill Creek. Every night at dark, Mrs. Fox would leave a kerosene lamp lit in the large widows letting weary travelers know they were welcome to stop and rest.

If you have more information on the property's history or would like to contribute to this history, please reach out!

In the meantime, take a look at our Sylvan Cabin while it was under construction. Today this gorgeous cabin sleeps 7-10 with access to a small beach on the lake it overlooks.
