During a hot June weekend from the 12th to the 14th, the 22nd Georgia Heavy Artillery held its first summer event at Fort McAllister State Park. The organization portrays the Emmett Rifles, who were stationed here during the Civil War. These young living historians did an outstanding job bringing the soldiers' stories to life for our guests. Their next drill at Fort McAllister is scheduled for the weekend of September 11th, 2026. They are a valuable addition to our efforts to showcase the history of this fort and Coastal Georgia.

A Look Back.
Fort McAllister State Historic Park

1863
William Daniel Dixon's diary from the summer of 1863 describes an uneventful, vacation-like time.

“On June 14th, Major Anderson and he took some time to do a little boating. “I went with Major Anderson around to pay our first visit to the wreck of the(CSS) Nashville. There is nothing left but her iron work.

On June 17, the Captain took a trip. “I went down the river about 8 miles this morning on a fishing excursion and did not get back until 6:00 this afternoon. We did not get much as we could catch but very little bait. I got pretty well burnt by the sun. “On another occasion for past time this afternoon, Lieutenant Edgar McDonal and myself went hunting. The result was a great deal of walking and very few birds.”

HAPPY BIRTHDAY #165
Fort McAllister State Historic Park

On June 7, 1861, Company A of the DeKalb Riflemen, under the command of Captain August Wetter, arrived in the area to supervise the construction and later to garrison the fort.

The construction was carried out by 30 enslaved men from local plantations, who began work at 5 AM and worked 17 hours a day. The fort was constructed by rearranging the earthen features of the lower bluff to create the higher bluff. The fort's construction allowed the guns to fire “en barbette” (over the wall) rather than through embrasures cut in the wall.

Completed in midsummer 1861, the battery contained four 32-pound cannons, two officers, and 39 men. In January 1862, it was renamed Fort McAllister.
