The mission of the Grand Lodge of Virginia is to teach and perpetuate a way of life that promotes the Brotherhood of Man under the Fatherhood of God and to assist Lodges to grow and prosper. OUR VISION is to be the premier organization composed of men of integrity and character, who are honest, true to their word, have a strong belief in God, are devoted to family, charitable in their community, a

nd courteous and helpful to each other. Freemasonry is the world's oldest and largest fraternal organization. It is open to men of 18 years old or older of any color, any religion, nationality or social standing, the only requirement is a belief in a Supreme Being. Its body of knowledge and system of ethics is based on the belief that each man has a responsibility to improve himself while being devoted to his family, faith, country, and Fraternity.

Brother George Washington left us many lessons, but this one has a way of settling into a man’s thoughts: “Associate with men of good quality if you esteem your own reputation; for it is better to be alone than in bad company.”

His words remind us that the people we choose to walk beside shape the kind of men we become. In our Lodges and in our daily lives, we grow stronger when we surround ourselves with those who strive to live uprightly. Their example steadies us, sharpens us, and encourages us to hold fast to the values we claim to uphold.

Washington was not only warning us to avoid poor influences. He was urging us to rise to a standard worthy of good company. Each of us should aim to be the kind of man whose presence brings calm, clarity, and trust. When we stand alone, we have the chance to examine our own character. When we stand with others, we reveal it.

May we continue to seek companions who lift us higher, and may we work to be that kind of companion in return.

EVENT: Wreath Laying Ceremony - "Light Horse" Harry Lee, III

Date: Saturday, June, 20, 2026
Time: 10:00 AM
Location: Stratford Hall, 253 Great House Road, Stratford, VA
Attire: Suit & Tie

Henry Lee III, best known as “Light-Horse Harry,” stands as one of Virginia’s most dynamic Revolutionary War figures—a daring cavalry commander, respected statesman, and unforgettable voice of the founding generation. Born in 1756 at Leesylvania plantation and educated at the College of New Jersey, now Princeton University, Lee left the study of law to join the American cause, where his bold horsemanship and aggressive battlefield leadership quickly earned him fame. As commander of Lee’s Legion, he led one of the Revolution’s most effective mixed cavalry and infantry units, achieving national recognition for his daring 1779 raid at Paulus Hook and later distinguishing himself throughout the Southern Campaign under General Nathanael Greene. After the war, Lee continued his service as a member of the Confederation Congress, Governor of Virginia, commander of militia forces during the Whiskey Rebellion, and U.S. Congressman. He is perhaps most remembered for delivering George Washington’s national eulogy, forever honoring him as “First in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen.” His life remains a powerful story of courage, public service, personal struggle, and enduring historical legacy. While firm extant documentation of his Masonic membership at Hiram Lodge No. 59 in Westmoreland remains elusive, Lee social activities certainly moved within Masonic Revolutionary circles, and his memory continues to hold a respected place in Virginia’s patriotic and fraternal history.

William Clark (August 1, 1770 – September 1, 1838) was an American explorer, soldier, Indian agent, and territorial governor. A native of Virginia, he grew up in pre-statehood Kentucky before later settling in what became the state of Missouri.

Along with Meriwether Lewis, Clark led the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804–1806 across the Louisiana Purchase to the Pacific Ocean, the first major effort to explore and map much of what is now the Western United States and to assert American claims to the Pacific Northwest. before the expedition, he served in a militia and the United States Army. Afterward, he served in a militia and as governor of the Missouri Territory. From 1822 until his death in 1838, he served as a U.S. Superintendent of Indian Affairs in St. Louis.

Lynnhaven Lodge No. 220 was first conceived during a discussion following a church meeting at Lynnhaven Presbyterian Church in March 1961. Several active Master Masons were discussing the need for a Lodge in the immediate area and agreed to pursue the idea. Petitions were circulated for possible members and on April 13, 1961, a meeting was called to formalize the creation of a Masonic Lodge in the Lynnhaven community. The meeting was held in the Lynnhaven-Little Neck Civic League building with Right Worshipful Ira McCloud presiding. Forty-two brethren had signed the petition and many attended this first meeting to assist in this serious endeavor. At this meeting, the Lodge name was selected and the first stationed officers were elected.

Subsequent meetings were held on May 12, and July 8, 1961, to establish committees for the dispensation request, meeting site, and furniture, etc. On July 13, 1961, a request was made to the Grand Lodge of Virginia for a dispensation to work under the selected name with the following officers:

Ira McCloud Worshipful Master
William Bradt Senior Warden
Cecil C. Canton Junior Warden

The Grand Master of Masons in Virginia approved the request on July 26, 1961. The first stated communication was held on September 14, 1961, when the dispensation was presented to the Lodge. Four petitions for degrees were read and the Lodge was off and running.
