There’s still time to get some state park adventures in before the summer ends.

I’ve visited a lot of state parks (102 in PA to be exact!😉) and these are some of my favorites.

1. Worlds End (Sullivan County)—You’ll feel like you’ve been transported to a different world when you visit this park.

2. Laurel Hill (Somerset County)—My favorite state park in the Laurel Highlands. It’s just so charming.

3. Swatara ( Lebanon County and Schuylkill County)—Another super charming park. I love the bridges and Bordner’s Cabin.

4. McConnells Mill (Lawrence County)—The mill, the covered bridge, the waterfalls—it’s all very impressive.

5. Black Moshannon—The bog, the forest, the bears—it’s all fantastic! Rent a cabin in the park. You won’t regret it.

Did you know you can walk through a 3,118-foot canal tunnel in Maryland? 🚶‍♀️

The Paw Paw Tunnel is one of the most impressive engineering feats along the historic 184.5-mile C&O Canal Towpath, which stretches from Georgetown in Washington, D.C., to Cumberland, Maryland.

Construction began in 1836 and took 14 years to complete. Instead of following six miles of winding bends in the Potomac River, canal boats were able to pass straight through the mountain.

For this hike, I parked at the Paw Paw Campground, then walked about 0.5 miles along the towpath to reach the tunnel.

After walking through the tunnel, I continued to a view of the Potomac River before turning around, making the hike about 4 miles round trip.

Looking for more of a challenge? Add the Tunnel Hill Trail to create a loop with overlooks of the Paw Paw Bends. Be aware that this trail is steep and rocky in sections, so wear sturdy shoes.

One thing that can be confusing: Paw Paw, the town, is in West Virginia, but the Paw Paw Tunnel is actually located in Oldtown, Maryland.

💡 A few tips:
• Bring a flashlight or headlamp—the tunnel is dark!
• Wear shoes with good traction since the tunnel floor can be damp and uneven.
• Dogs are welcome on leash.
• Bikes are to be walked through the tunnel. 🚴‍♂️

Snapshots from a few days well spent in West Virginia (and a little Maryland!) with my dad, sisters, and kids.

What started out years ago (before we all had kids) as an annual week long Myrtle Beach trip has transformed into a much shorter and closer to home trip.

We pick a different location each year and as the kids get older and busier, not everyone can make it, but we try our best and always have a good time. If you’re in this stage of life with older kids who play sports and work, you know the struggle.

This year we stayed in the Dandelion Lodge by Blue Maple | Premium Cabins in West Virginia in Berkeley Springs. It sleeps 16 and is pet-friendly (perfect for my sister’s new puppy!) There are so many cabin rentals in the area, so it’s the perfect spot for an easy getaway with family or friends.

This was a pretty chill trip with a mix of hanging out at the cabin and doing a little exploring. I didn’t focus on content for this one, but I can’t go on a trip and not take ANY pictures, right? 😉➡️
