Located on the western edge of Lookout Mountain, this is one of the most scenic parks in the state, offering rugged geology and exceptional hiking. The park straddles a deep gorge cut into the mountain by Sitton Gulch Creek, and elevation differs from 800 to 1,980 feet. Overnight guests can choose from new yurts, cottages near the canyon edge, a modern campground and spacious, walk-in tent sites. Backpackers can enjoy camping in a hemlock grove on the 2-mile Backcountry Loop. The most spectacular view into the canyon is an easy walk from the picnic area; however, hikers can also explore a rim trail or journey to the canyon floor by a series of staircases. Two waterfalls cascade over layers of sandstone and shale into pools below, with their flow depending on recent rains. This Waterfalls Trail is part of the popular Canyon Climbers Club. Backpackers, mountain bikers and equestrians can explore several miles on the Cloudland Connector Trail.

All over the state our Friends of Georgia State Parks volunteers groups will be hosting events with opportunities for the public to volunteer at their favorite parks. Please come join us in the festivities at ours and give back to your favorite park!

Our Mushroom program in August was well received, but if you missed it don't despair - we are offering another one in October. This time our guest mushroom authority is Mr. Sam Landes. Sam is a member of the North American Mycological Association and he has been the Treasurer of the Mushroom Club of Georgia for the past ten years. His talk will be a general overview of all aspects fungal including medicinal uses, environmental cleanup uses and pesticidal uses. It also addresses edible mushrooms found in Georgia and useful tips for mushroom ID. Afterwards we will take a short walk to see if we can find any growing in the park.

We will also be holding occasional mushroom talks by one of our knowledgeable park naturalists throughout October. These dates will be posted on our programs calendar for October. Come join us for a foray into the world of Mushrooms!

** Please note - we have had to amend our caving schedule for Sundays in October. There will be no 9:30 AM trips - all trips on Sundays in October will begin at 1:30 PM at the Interpretive Center. Sorry if this has caused an inconvenience.

On September 10, 17, and 25 at 10 a.m. eastern time join a Naturalist at the Interpretive Center to learn a variety of frontier skills. Learn to craft a fire using flint and steel, and watch a demonstration of "fire-cake" being cooked over hot coals the way soldiers would have prepared them during the revolutionary war. After learning these historic techniques, practice making fire with a modern day Ferro Rod and campfire cooking with a cast iron skillet. Then make your own cordage using natural materials.
There is a $5.00 per person fee for this program. Duration =2 hrs.
