When The Promissory Hotel opened, we hoped to preserve not only the building's architecture but also the memories of the people who gave it life.

One of those people was Margaret Smith.

Margaret began her banking career at First National Exchange Bank in 1973 and remained with the institution through its transitions to Dominion and later BB&T, building a distinguished career that spanned more than four decades. While continuing her career in banking, she also taught banking courses at Campbell University, sharing her knowledge and helping to prepare the next generation of professionals.

During a renovation years ago, Margaret purchased one of the bank's original desks. It remained in her home for decades as a cherished reminder of the place where she built her career.

After Margaret passed away in 2024, her family made a remarkable decision. Rather than keep the desk, they chose to return it to the building where its story began.

Today, that desk welcomes guests in our lobby and helps us tell the story of this remarkable building.

Recently, Margaret's daughters, Kelli Smith Mundy and Terri Smith Kiesenhofer, visited The Promissory to see the desk once again and mark the second anniversary of their mother's passing. It was an honor to share that moment with them and see this special piece of their family's history back where it belongs. ❤️
