Celebrate the Navy’s Birthday on October 13 and recognize the brave men and women who have served our country — past and present. Established during the Revolutionary War, the original Continental Navy was formed, disbanded, and then reestablished nearly 10 years later. Today it’s the largest and most capable navy in the world, with the highest combined battle fleet tonnage. The Navy also boasts the world’s largest aircraft carrier fleet, over 300,000 active personnel, and nearly 100,000 in the Ready Reserve.

Behind every song that stirs your soul, there’s a drummer keeping a beat. Whether you listen to pop, rock, jazz, country, hip-hop or soul, it’s a drummer who makes all your favorite songs get up and move. That’s why every October 10, we celebrate National Hug a Drummer Day — a day for giving these hardworking, talented, and often underappreciated musicians their day in the spotlight!

Exhilarating and dispiriting, thrilling and embarrassing, joyous and depressing — no activity on Earth encompasses the full emotional spectrum like golf — and that’s why we love it! This October 4, celebrate National Golf Lovers Day by recognizing one of the world’s most popular sports.
Hit the links and play a round as you enjoy a few competitive and friendly laughs with your fellow sufferers. While golf can drive even the greatest players completely bonkers, hitting just one good shot means you can’t wait to tee it up again. In other words, “just grip it and rip it.”

The first Friday of October is World Smile Day (October 1), a relatively new holiday with a fascinating story. Created by a commercial artist named Harvey Ball, this day came about as a response to his creation of the smiley face. Harvey worried that the commercialization of the symbol would lessen its impact. We can hardly blame him for his estimation; the symbol has been used in many different ways including clothing, comic books, coffee mugs, pins, and more. These little yellow faces are more than just a symbol, they’re a statement about the power of smiling.

The International Day of Sign Languages is celebrated on September 23 by the United Nations. The International Day of Sign Languages is commemorated on this day since the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) was founded on this day in 1951, as a result of efforts by the WFD in 2017.
Did you know there are around 72 million deaf individuals in the world? The World Federation of the Deaf provided this data. Over 300 distinct sign languages are used by these people together. Many people are unaware that sign languages are natural languages in their own right.
They should be accorded just as much credit and significance as spoken language, despite their structural differences. In addition, there is an international sign language. Deaf individuals utilize this when mingling, traveling, and attending international meetings.

We celebrate National I.T. Professionals Day on the third Tuesday of every September, on September 21 this year, to recognize the technical experts — network engineers, system administrators, database admins, ethical hackers, and many more types of I.T. professionals — that make sure our computer systems run smoothly. It takes a solid set of skills and talents to fill the shoes of an I.T. pro so, today, we say thanks to the people who come to fix our devices when they stop working the way they should — the behind-the-scenes operators without whom we’d be back in front of an archaic chalkboard, doing things the hard way.

‘RESPECT’ — these seven letters spell out something we all aspire to get and are taught to give out; see how National Respect Day encourages us to be more respectful to everyone and help others do the same on September 18 each year. This year our event coincides with other special days like National Cheeseburger Day, World Bamboo Day, and even International Red Panda Day.

NATIONAL GUACAMOLE DAY
It’s not just a side dish anymore. On National Guacamole Day every September 16, we elevate this tasty green blend into the spotlight. Guacamole (or “guac”) is made of avocados, which are well-known for the health benefits related to their high vitamin content and lots of cholesterol-lowering healthy fats. Originally native to Mexico and Central America, avocados grow on trees. In fact, avocados are technically considered a fruit! There are hundreds of ways to prepare guacamole. People spice up their guacamole with onion, garlic, cumin, tomato, cilantro, or even store-bought salsa. Traditionally, guacamole is served with tortilla chips but it’s also good with corn chips, carrot sticks and celery. It is delicious on sandwiches and hamburgers or in salads. Some people even blend it into smoothies! So, Go Green with guacamole on September 16!...Just...guac-it-up!

On the first Sunday after Labor Day we celebrate National Grandparents Day. This year the date falls on September 12. Like Mother’s day and Father’s day we also have a whole day dedicated to our grandparents. Grandparents and children have a special connection that is proven to both make grandparents live longer, and also make children more emotionally resilient. Grandparents Day is an opportunity to treasure that connection and spend some quality family time together.

We Remember
For many, September 11, 2001, began like any other weekday. We made our way to work. Children attended school. We shopped, had coffee, waited in line at a drive-thru. Those of us who weren’t in New York City heard the first reports on the radio or television. A friend or neighbor alerted us to a plane flying into one of the Twin Towers. We felt disbelief. An accident, perhaps, a miscalculation. Then, a second plane flew into the second tower. Our disbelief turned into uncertainty and concern.
Those on the ground faced terror and obstacles they had never known. As a set of coordinated su***de attacks organized by the militant group Al Qaeda targeted the World Trade Center, the rest of the nation witnessed the unbelievable. And then a third plane crashed into The Pentagon. And yet another crashed into a field in Shanksville, PA.
Memorial
Every year since that fateful day, the United States comes together to remember the fallen. We remember the first responders and those who made difficult decisions. Since that day, memorials have risen from the ashes.

WORLD COCONUT DAY
You can’t make a piña colada or a decent Thai curry without it, its water makes a great recovery drink, and its fibrous husk, when burned, repels mosquitos — these are just three of many excellent reasons to celebrate World Coconut Day on September 2. One of nature’s most versatile products, the coconut plant (and its various parts) can be used for food and drink, cosmetic preparations, and decorating. Some coconut proponents (cocoproponents?) even claim that the fruit’s oil can reverse dental decay — if you swish it around in your mouth for 20 minutes a day! Most of us aren’t comfortable with a mouthful of oil, no matter whence that oil comes or what it’s purported to do. Whether stuck on a deserted island or relaxing at home, we can still get caught up in the coconut craze. Go coconuts!!!

NATIONAL ASSISTED LIVING WEEK
Each year beginning on Grandparent’s Day, National Assisted Living Week celebrates those served in residences across the nation. Each year the National Center for Assisted Living selects a theme to focus the events for residents, caregivers, and family.
The week brings communities together to recognize those living in assisted living arrangements. It’s an opportunity to explore the benefits and the lifestyles.
Assisted living offers many benefits to residents. While seniors may still lead active lives, other parts of life become difficult. For example, assisted living eliminates the burden of home maintenance. It also improves opportunities for social interaction. Additionally, assisted living costs are usually lower than a nursing home. In an assisted living setting, privacy is more easily maintained, too.
The facilities offing assisted living provide quality care in a variety of settings. Exploring the options right for you or your family member is important. The week offers many activities to explore. Be sure to check them out.
