To ensure the safety of your children, please follow these safety tips if your accommodations include a swimming pool:

✔️ Secure your pool with appropriate barriers. Never prop the pool’s gate door open.
✔️ Designate a responsible adult to supervise closely and stay within arm’s reach of young children.
✔️ After swim time is over, shut and lock doors that provide access to water.
✔️ If a child is missing, always check the water first.

According to the CDC, the most common cause of death in children ages 1-4 is drowning. For every child who dies from drowning, another eight receive emergency care for non-fatal drownings. For more swimming safety tips, please visit CDC.gov/Drowning/Prevention.

⚡️ Lightning strikes the earth up to 2 billion times yearly. At 50,000°F, it’s hotter than the surface of the ☀️ sun and can produce 5 to 10 billion Joules of energy. That’s a whole lot of power!

Lighthouses at the Cape Hatteras National Seashore have been struck by lightning multiple times. One lightkeeper at Bodie Island even experienced a severe jolt while standing on the metal landing, resulting in numbness from the waist down for several hours.

So how do we stay safe from this mesmerizing and dangerous force?

⛈️ Monitor the weather so you can plan ahead.

🔊 Lightning can strike as far away as 10 miles from rain. If you hear thunder, it means there’s lightning in the area and you should seek shelter immediately.

🏠 Use shelter with plumbing and electricity or a vehicle with a hard top. Avoid being the tallest object or standing near tall metal structures or trees.

⏱️ Wait 30 minutes after the last thunderclap before heading back outside. It’s the safest way to ensure the danger has passed.

Stay aware, stay safe!

in 1874, Congress passed the Life-Saving Stations Act, paving the way for the United States Life-Saving Service! Before, life-saving stations were run by volunteers without the rigorous training and discipline that later became the standard.

Thanks to this act, seven stations were built in North Carolina’s Outer Banks—eventually growing to 29 before transitioning to United States Coast Guard stations in 1915. Today, you can see two historic stations at Cape Hatteras National Seashore: Bodie Island Life-Saving Station and Little Kinnakeet Life-Saving Station.
