The sands of Hatteras are always in motion. Our beaches evolve daily with changing winds and waves. Late summer always builds back the beaches in Rodanthe to some degree, regardless of recent erosion. It’s an ebb and flow as old as time itself.
The Inn at Rodanthe stands strong. She has weathered many storms and will continue to do so. We love the Outer Banks and want to see all areas thrive. Positivity is a lot stronger than negativity. Regardless of those seeking recent shock and awe posts, we are fervently watching and defending our beloved beaches and working with Dare Cty and the Department of Natural Resources to monitor changing tides. Social media is what it is. The Inn is fine and welcoming new visitors as always.
God bless you all and thank you for your support!

The weather has been a little wild the last two days, but it did produce a double-rainbow right off the beach from The Inn at Rodanthe! Pretty amazing! Is there such a thing as a leprechaun mermaid?😇

On this day in 1902 two brothers departed from Elizabeth City onboard the sixty foot double masted schooner Lou Willis. They were bound for Kitty Hawk to resume experimentations with flying. The vessel, under command of Captain Franklin Midgett, was built in Smyrna, Carteret County North Carolina in 1876. The Wright bothers, Wilbur and Orville, chartered the Lou Willis on many occasions in 1902, 1903, and 1908. This particular voyage to Kitty Hawk on August 27, 1902 was a little more grueling than some though due to headwinds and rough seas. It took 36 hours for the schooner to cruise down the Pasquotank River and Albemarle Sound.

Poll - The upper east tower of the Inn has 4 windows in a half moon shape…2 facing east, 2 facing northwest. With renovations under way, the tower shutters were removed to reveal a bird’s eye view of the beach. It is almost too good to give up!
Should we:
Leave the 2 east facing shutters off?
Or, re-hang all 4 shutters?
First world problems!

Painting shutters today and found the most wonderful surprise. Blueprints for Serendipity dated July 1987!

Cleaning rugs while installing new flooring. I rather like the octopus on the porch. ☺️

The off-season means we are working hard on updates and repairs to the Inn in prep for some glorious beach days ahead. If you notice a missing shutter or two, they will be back…in that beautiful shade of blue. 🙂

Does The Inn have a tie to the first flights of Ingenuity on Mars? Not really, but we are just a short ride south of the Wright Bros Memorial where it all began. Bring your family for a stay and enjoy both the history of the Outer Banks, and a bit of sunshine on the beach!
