The beach is on your mind and the start of your vacation is so close you can taste it, but just before crossing the state line into North Carolina, good ol’ Virginia reaches into your pocket one last time for a $10 toll on the Chesapeake Expressway! Fortunately, there is a simple bypass you can take that lets you keep the cash - Battlefield Parkway. Try to set this up in your GPS before hitting the road but here are a few screenshots to help…

A last minute, pre-season project is ready for our guests’ enjoyment! Where the rear steps led down to the pool, people were met with what I’ll call the “lockjaw landing” due to all the rusty nails holding together rotten wood. It’s all gone now, replaced with planking that also continues around the pool edge, covering what was an unsightly space of broken shells and weeds. It’s now the perfect area for a couple of new Adirondack chairs!

Nature finds a way - even if it’s in the middle of your driveway! While prepping the house for the season, I turned my back for five minutes and this little miss shows up. Google Lens says it’s a yellow-bellied slider, a semi-aquatic turtle native to this area. And she’s laying eggs! I wanted to encourage her to find a safer location but she was fully engaged in the process by this point. Once complete, she scampered across Atlantic Dr, heading for the canal. Hope no one crushes her babies!

The charcoal grill setup is complete! Located in the same spot as the old park-style grill, the new high-end Ash & Ember grill boasts a side table and a lid. Grill tools hang on hooks for your convenience just inside the carport. And to help make cleanup a little easier, an ash can, scoop and bucket are at the end of the garbage cart storage area. Apologies to those who prefer propane but the potentially catastrophic grill fire of a couple seasons ago really drove home how dangerous that was. We hope you enjoy this improvement to Alex’s Hideaway!
