I pulled off Old Route 17 not knowing what I’d find. The room was quiet. Crisp clean white linens. Three landscape paintings hung on the wall, the kind someone painted slowly on a Sunday afternoon. A small desk with a brass lamp cast just enough light to give a warm glow.

I put my bag down and stood there for a minute.
I knew I found a great place to stay.

William Sergeant Kendall painted his daughter Elisabeth in 1909 and called it Psyche. Known as The Butterfly Girl, it shows a young girl sitting quietly, translucent wings at her back.

By 1936 it was famous enough that Iodent Toothpaste gave away lithograph prints with every tube sold. She found her way to us eventually. Now she’s part of the portrait collection that lines the walls of our fireplace room. Good company.

She came into the room and sat in the straight back chair. Too stiff. She then sat in the metal chair. Too cold. She finally sat in the leather chair by the fireplace. It reclined, and it was just right. The bear was watching and he didn’t mind at all. She stayed awhile and felt right at home.

The coneflowers went in this spring. By Summer the bees had claimed them. Echinacea, named for the sea urchin, for those spiky centers that catch the light and hold it. Deep pink, coral, and a red so rich it stops you. They’ve been healing people and feeding pollinators for centuries. We just gave them a corner of the garden. They did the rest.

Old route 17 runs right out front. It’s our road. Our address. Our spot. The new one runs along the hill behind us. On dark quiet nights you can hear the semis downshift as they brake for the slope. Lower gears slowing the momentum. A quiet rumble in the dark. The quintessential sound of a roadside motel and tavern. We’ve been here since before the road moved.

Folk art from another era. Carved wood, birchbark base. The kind of thing that used to line the shelves of every roadside stop from the Catskills through the Adirondacks and up into Quebec. This one ended up here. The real ones are still out there, building wetlands, filtering water, holding the whole ecosystem together. Keystone species. Unsung heroes. Come on in and tell us your best beaver story. We’re listening.
