Roslyn’s Harvest Fest weekend at Suncadia is nine minutes down the road.

It’s the 20th year of the festival: October 2–4 and October 9–11. Friday nights it runs at Suncadia Social from 5 to 8. Saturday and Sunday it moves out to Nelson Farm, 10 to 4, with a pumpkin patch, hayrides, live music, archery, potato launchers, and a full bar once the kids have had their fill of the hay maze. Getting in is free; a handful of the activities cost extra.

Here’s how I’d run the weekend if it were mine. Drive out Friday night, grab dinner in Roslyn, walk it off on Pennsylvania Ave. Saturday, head to Suncadia for the day, pumpkin patch, hayride, the whole thing. Come back to Roslyn that evening and you’ve still got The Brick for a burger and a b**r, or Honey’s Kitchen right downstairs from us if you’d rather sit down properly.

Fall comes early to Roslyn. The light goes gold and low across Pennsylvania Ave by four in the afternoon. Woodsmoke. Fog sitting in the valley until ten. The first morning you can see your breath walking down for coffee.

Then the larches turn that two-week window in the Cascades when the hillsides go copper and everybody within a hundred miles tries to get to a trailhead at once. Sleeping out here puts you in front of that crowd instead of behind it.

Sweater on the chair. Boots by the door. Nothing on the schedule.

This is the best season we have and it’s also the shortest. October weekends go first, and they go early.

Roslyn dug coal out of these hills for a hundred years. Now one of the best things you can carry home from here is a bar of soap.

Roslyn Soap Co has been making it in town since 2000 olive oil bar soaps, bath melts, epsom and sea salt soaks, body butters, beeswax candles, and a full zero-waste line. Everything is made by hand, and the woman behind the counter knows every ingredient in everything on the shelf.

It’s a small shop. It smells unbelievable. You are not going to leave with one thing.

You can walk to every restaurant in downtown Roslyn from our front door. Most of them in under two minutes.

The Spruce Moose Inn sits right on Pennsylvania Avenue in historic downtown Roslyn, WA — three rooms above the café, in the middle of everything. Here’s what’s within a few hundred feet:

🍺 The Brick Saloon — open since 1889, the oldest continuously running saloon in Washington State, with a 23-foot running water spittoon and a basement jail cell. Directly across the street.

☕ Honey’s Kitchen — literally downstairs. You’ll smell the coffee through the floor around 7am.

📚 Basecamp Books and Bites — café, bar and bookstore in one, with a speakeasy below the main floor. Coffee daily from 7am.

🍕 Village Pizza — one block north on Pennsylvania.

🌮 Roslyn Mexican Grill — a block west, open till 9 most nights.

🍻 Roslyn Brewing Company — German-style la**rs brewed right here since 1990.

🍫 Roslyn Candy Company — next door in the old bank building. Chocolates and local ice cream.

That’s more places to eat than you can get through in one night.

Park once. Don’t touch the car again until you leave.

That green sign has read the same thing since 1889: Northwestern Improvement Co. Back then this was the company store, where Roslyn’s coal miners bought their groceries, boots, hardware, and dynamite — all of it on credit against the next paycheck. “I owe my soul to the company store” wasn’t a lyric here. It was the arrangement.

It’s the largest building in town and the only one still standing from the Roslyn Coal Field. Locally fired red brick, cast-iron storefront, pressed tin ceilings inside. The miner out front is the Coal Miners Memorial — the names on that wall are the men who didn’t come home from the shafts.

The store closed in 1957. These days the doors open onto shops instead, but the building hasn’t forgotten what it was.

Since 1889, people have been bellying up to the same bar in Roslyn. Miners, movie crews, and now you.

The Brick Saloon is Washington’s oldest continuously operating bar — 45,000 local bricks, a 100-year-old back bar that sailed around Cape Horn from England, and a 23-foot running water spittoon still doing its job along the base of the bar. There’s a jail cell in the basement and prohibition tunnels underneath. If the Roslyn setting looks familiar, it stood in for Cicely, Alaska in Northern Exposure.

Come for a burger and a b**r, stay for live music on the weekend. Order the fried pickles. History goes down easy here.
