Today marks the 5th anniversary of the Great American Outdoors Act (GAOA)! Since 2020, the GAOA has:

âś… Permanently funded the Land and Water Conservation Fund, helping protect the wild and scenic nature of the A.T.
⚒️ Created the Legacy Restoration Fund, which funds vital repairs across the A.T., national parks, forests, and wildlife refuges to improve access, safety, and the visitor experience.; supports 20,000+ jobs a year; and generates $10+ billion for the economy.

This vital funding will expire without action. Celebrate GAOA’s impact by urging Congress to extend and improve the Legacy Restoration Fund through the America the Beautiful Act (S. 1547).

National Park Service and Federal Highway Administration engineers are currently assessing the damage. The park will share more information as it’s available.

A microburst storm has caused severe local flooding and a possible rockslide along Interstate 40 near the Tennessee-North Carolina state line. Reports indicate that the Appalachian Trail is impassable from approximately Davenport Gap to Brown Gap/Forest Service Road 148A (NOBO mile 239.4 to 251.9). The interstate is also closed in both directions. Hikers should avoid this section.

While the A.T. remains officially open through Great Smoky Mountains National Park, it is unclear if Davenport Gap is accessible due to damage. Northbound hikers should consider finding an alternative route from Newfound Gap (NOBO mile 208.0).

📣 Calling all A.T. photographers 📸

When you think of the A.T., what images come to mind? A section of green tunnel with sunlight filtered through the trees? Or maybe an open summit that rewarded you for a tough climb? If you have a photo that you think captures the essence of the A.T., please consider submitting it for inclusion in the official 2027 ATC calendar!

We are currently seeking submissions of full-color, digital images until July 15, 2025. Visit appalachiantrail.org/calendar for more details on submission instructions and compensation for selected images.

Madison Gulf Trail Bridge
The Madison Gulf Bridge which crosses the Peabody River along the Appalachian Trail on the Androscoggin Ranger District has been closed after an inspection deemed the bridge unsafe for pedestrian traffic. The bridge will remain closed until a new structure is designed and installed. While the bridge remains closed, White Mountain NF staff have coordinated with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy to identify an official detour for the Appalachian Trail. The new route eliminates the river crossing and provides a safer option. The detour is signed and blazed to identify the route.

Any questions regarding the closure can be directed to the Androscoggin Ranger Station at (603) 466-2713.
